I've been having exactly the same issue.

I'm on BT with a Home Hub.

Using the console to conect is causing the hang on "Sending client data". Cancelling and trying again gets "Steam ID is already in use on server" and the (1) when I do finaly manage to get in.

I am beginning to suspect that this BT home hub thingy uses a very dodgy implementation of UDP connection tracking. Can using one be avoided?

I hope so. The bloody HomeHub rest it's self 3 times in a row whilest trying to connect tonight. Grrr.

Apparenly BT dialed in and found nothing wrong with it. It's only TF2 that causes it for me. Other on-line games seem uneffected.

Anyone with a home hub, put it in the cupboard and buy one of these:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/52244

I did, and now look at me, I get laid every night by multiple women, smoke cuban cigars rolled on the thighs of virgins and dance with the mu-hu-le-ka tribe of Venezuela until the early hours.  And if that's not enough for you, it should sort your net problems.  It has mine.

I am beginning to suspect that this BT home hub thingy uses a very dodgy implementation of UDP connection tracking.

I confirmed these suspicions myself a very long time ago!

It does indeed track UDP connections, it interprets the increased UDP traffic from TF2 as a DoS attack and resets itself. You can telnet into the router and disable this, though I don't recall the specific procedure.

If it's different depending on how you launch it seems unlikely to be an ISP thing?
It could be an ISP + Router thing though.

Seems strange that some people are getting better results with a new router but the same old ISP.

TBH, Valve changed their network code a while back, and things have been worse since. This I attribute as the cause for the "choke" issue lots of people are seeing.

As for the connection issues, I reckon the network traffic has changed since a recent valve update, and this is causing problems with routers like BT home hub, which are not just set-up like simple, generic routers. The home hub may be biased towards IP phone calls as well and supporting the BT vision stuff too. A combination of BT hardware and configuration settings.

BT's system is shocking, as are the home hubs, this is coming from a friend who used to work for them.  My little netgear hub has really helped with things, so I can't recommend it enough.  Beyond that, there's not much you can do if their exchanges are overloaded from too much use.

Those of you with troubles, you could look into http://www.bt.com/infinity if you haven't already, or maybe even switching ISP (virgin cable *cough* *cough*).  Although then I know folks will have contracts and such...

The netgear thingy is currently £30. For that kind of money, I'm willing to give it a punt. I don't use BT vission. I've got Sky thanks. Something BT randomly keep trying to sell me. The last time it was an Irish lady who wouldn't take a polite hint. So I opted for "Talk techno Babble" instead. Went on about UHF arial alignment and other such nonsence. She eventually took the hint. As for hub phone. I don't have one, as I have a normal telephone. And that works just fine as well. So £30 on a different wireless router seems very apealing. Especially if it causes the same side effects Barry is getting Smiley

As for BT fiber optic? I too have heard of this mythical creature. So in the same school of blind hope as "I can win the lottery with this ticket", I have registered my interest with BT for this product. Time will tell.

And there is no way I will ever go to Virgin. I would have to be exceptionaly desparate. I would take dial up over Virgin. I had my fill of them as NTL. Just because the name has changed, doens't mean that the same rectal fiddeling brain dead donky f*ckers aren't working there. Grrrrrr!

Right, time to spend some money Smiley

Get Beeeeee. Also I have collected tons of netgear routers for free over the years although i did buy one once for a tenner off ebay, either way no need to spend £30. If you can find the right model on ebay as well you should be able to flash custom roms that do QoS

I've got an Netgear 834GT, It's not bad. you can put custom firmware on it too (google dgteam)

This is probably just the network engineer Nerd in me talking, but BT (and Virgin) describing their services as Fiber Optic really makes me angry.  It's a bloody Fiber Backbone and nothing special. It's like saying the Royal Mail is an 500MPH Air service because they use planes for some of their longer distance stuff but the postman still peddles a bloody bike to actually get to your house. All BT's Infinity does is reduce the length of telephone wire a bit. It's still ADSL with all the limitations that brings - susceptibility to interference, speeds affected by distance, and thanks to their choice of equipment: reduced sync speeds as more people sign up to the service in your area (early adopters should see around 35Mb/s but by the takeup reaches just 30% sync speeds for everyone will be down around 22Mb/s)

Virgin are the same, you've still got a copper Coax cable between you and their distribution box a few hundred meters away, but Coax has a much greater headroom (50MB/s, but easily channel bonded to scale up to 400Mb/s and possibly beyond)

A proper Fibre to the Premises service has a hell of a lot more headroom than even that, easily capable of 1Gb/s and potentially 10Gb/s and over.

I hope it solves all your problems Rippy.

See, I had Virgin cable for 10 years in my last place and never had any trouble.  I mean literally NEVER.  Other folks seem to hate them, I guess it comes down to luck / area / personal choice.

If it were up to me, I'd see you all have super awesome broadband, with the aforementioned side effects.  SO VOTE "AVERAGE" IN 2012 FOR ALL YOUR INTERNET, SEX, CIGAR AND DANCING NEEDS!
