defend it against monsters and search for treasure, theres not much treasure or monsters atm and we have monsters off as they don't do anything in mp right now except push you and be annoying, but yeah the new direction its slowly taking is becoming a proper game, last year it was just like a lego box with infinite blocks, you can still play that but development has moved into creating a real game out of it and its still alpha

I don't think there really is a 'game', as in a 'point'. If you like building stuff and digging randomly into the ground it's ace, but if not it's probably not for you

no theres a lot of resource management now junta, your tools wear down and you need tools to harvest blocks, you need rarer blocks to harvest the best stuff and so on. All the while being attacked at night by annoying monsters some of which can explode and wreck your stuff, also you can make circuits and traps.

He basically took his lego box and made it hump dwarf fortress and is now slowly giving birth to some hybrid. Eventually there will be quests and dragons to kill and lots more going on.

Emergent is the term I think; they give you tools, you bugger off and make your own fun.

There's quite a kick to be had out of exploring too, since the terrain generator kicks out some pretty impressive landscapes. Singleplayer is a cross between lego and an RPG, with equipment and bad guys and cool stuff that you basically 'unlock' as you dig out better tools, while simultaneously building your home. My two singleplayer games are a nomadic explorer game, settling only long enough to build the tools I need to get me over the next 5 hills or so alive, and a game where I've altered my inventory to be full of minecart materials and am building increasingly efficient train systems. Multiplayer servers are a bit more of a communal art project, with an emphasis on a) looking at what everyone else has built and b) outdoing them.

John Walker's take on it is worth reading, not just because he starts with the words "Perhaps you’re a bit like me, and when you hear about everyone else getting obsessively stuck into an obscure indie game you assume it’s not your sort of thing, and wait for the fuss to die down".

I'm not convinced any of that actually improves things though.

I'm only single playering, and like chuggy I'm building the worlds most awesome rail system, or I would if iron wasn't such a pain to find. Then i'm going to make new york.

Yeah, I think that's the appeal for me. Seeing other people's stuff and being outwardly (and genuinely) impressed, while simultaneously silently thinking "how can I do that better...".
