Well I'm starting to get back into this if anyone cares to join me, I found literally picking up everything that's valuable and sprinting as far away as you can for about 20 minutes to start again really re-kindles a love for this game.

world format is finally getting an overhaul. They've optimised the network packets a bit so lag might be a bit less, and the world height is doubled hooray! I think the extra height is more sky when the map gets converted? So your phallic constructions may thrust ever higher. They've also got rid of the insane idea of chunks (every bit of map loaded is the full 128 map height) now everything is sent as 16x16x16 cubes.

well it should help with rendering and less powerful machines, but for me and people with sexy machines this should also further improve network traffic. Previously the server would send complete chunks for the client to then render. Now its a more volumetric approach where the server will send out the nearest cube and bubble out from there, if they optimise it right this might go someway to getting rid of the horrible draw in you see in mp, because the server should also be prioritising cubes you can see and not sending data about some cave miles beneath you.

Right just want to check something here.

On SMP, say I were to find an Ender fortress in the overworld, activate the portal and slay the dragon, would that specific 'end' be finished forever?

As in, would others be able to use the same portal and slay the dragon? Or is it once it's done, it's done for everybody, and you'd have to find a new fortress?

Pretty sure you don't have to, just googled it and the new biomes will load, a long with Ocelots, you just need to go to new territory.
