Found out that the 'skill' level is an instant change... so might get a trap going and set the game to 'insane' (or equiv) and see if I can compensate for poor drops with sheer numbers

Beginning to feel as though mindlessly building stuff in Minecraft is basically the same as mindlessly levelling in WoW. Mine iron so you can mine diamond so you can mine obsidian so you etc etc etc.

Still, at least it's not on subscription.

It's not just about mining though? You can create new contraptions, mob traps, red stone circuits, some crazy railway. You should have a look at the mods on the minecraft forums.

I'm not saying Minecraft sucks or anything. But I think at the moment there's a discrepancy between the building stuff and the playing the game. If all you want to do is build things, then the game components (finding caves, fighting mobs, mining, inventory management) all basically gets in the way of creation, But at the same time, they don't really provide an interesting enough ruleset to make an engaging game.

One cave, even though it's unique, is basically the same as another, and the ideal way to engage most mobs is to just use a bow, and I just start wondering "Why am I doing this? To get more dynamite to blow up more rock to build a bigger castle which will need a railway to get around, but which, functionally, is exactly the same as a hut?"

I don't know, sometimes I love Minecraft, but other times I feel as though I'm just doing a grind. Claws is right: It has that sisyphean element that I play computer games to get away from. I suppose it depends on how I'm feeling at the time how much I enjoy it or don't, but I think it's telling the amount of people who've bought the game but don't seem to be playing anymore.

I'm seeing this everywhere. There's a great initial 'wooo' of exploration and open-ended play, but after a while you start to crave some sort of /structure/. Additionally, he's bringing a lot of the single-player game mechanics into MP, and many of them just diminish the freedom for very little payoff. Picks that destroy themselves are the same idea as, I dunno, eating burgers in Grand Theft Auto, and I didn't like it very much then either.

I think mobs, and the fact that pickaxes now break is better for smp. People start to stick together because it is easier to survive and I'd rather mine with someone else then be on my own in this cave with skeletons making me jump left and right.

That's always the way it was going to be, it's called Survival Multiplayer for a reason. If you want to just build things then play classic mode.

Well I agree, and I find the more game like aspects more interesting. However, I think there's work needed for them to be made more interesting.

Also, the mobs are much less of a problem with even two of you, seeing as they tend to only attack one or two at a time. Perhaps he should look into scaling mob spawns depending on number of players?

It worries me that he's moved to Beta, doesn't that normally mean feature completion? I suppose I don't really know what he classes as features, and what he classes as content. But he hasn't implemented seasons, which I thought might offer some impetus to keep playing outside the mine more build more aspect (Crops stop growing as fast, water starts freezing, less friendly mobs)
