They should just introduce a beta testing thing. So if you want you can beta test for a week, then do an actual "release" after that. If he's just leaving the game in a broken state... that's sort of stupid.

he had a testing session on irc and fixed some bugs before release, but he held that testing too late and apparently those testers suck. The wiki has comprehensive bug reports already

If he'd just fix tools breaking the other issues are just annoyances. hes gone off to some party now though what a dick. If hes going to half ass the release without testing he needs to plan to stick around to keep on the fixes |

Beta releases of a beta release seems a bit too simple. What we need is an alpha release of the beta release that can then be released in full beta, thus fixing bugs before the beta release before the release.

Changes go into nightly builds, once stable, get merged into alpha codebase, once stable, gets released into beta. No changes go anywhere unless they pass unit tests. (Where one of those is: Fire up server on existing worldfile, connect a client, mine a block, check if recieved item fits, tool use counter increased, etc...) It's JAVA ferchrissake, testing like this should be trivial to implement.  |

should be and is but i've still not learnt unit testing, i sucks.
And i got it wrong btw. tools break only if you drop them first so either with q or throwing them out your inventory, or dying. So basically lock up your decent tools and use stone for now. And don't drop them
