I just had a really cool idea for a light switch by covering or moving a glowstone block with pistons. Then I remembered minecraft doesn't occlude light  |

No it doesn't, one of my stupid deaths recently was when I covered some of my underfoot lighting and a creeper spawned on top of me. It only broadcasts light if a side is open to the air (or transparent block). If you embed it in a wall or floor and push a block over it the light should go out.

I have made one? Unless you are talking about something else. Pistons push blocks over glowstone and everything goes dark. |

hmm, well i've not actually tried making one so i guess i'm wrong. I was purely basing this off my experience with lava which does seem to light up blocks above it.
So hooray now I will make light switches
