Tried taking all the RAM out- exactly the same, including the two beeps.

Pretty much copy and pasted from my original email ordering the components:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8GHz Socket 775 1066MHz FSB 3MB L2 Cache
RAM: Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 Memory Kit CL5 1.8v
Motherboard: ASUS P5QL/EPU iP43 Socket 775 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

Also, bios definitely is AMI. Beep code table I used is here. I'll have a chat to someone about a processor transplant.

One thing you might do if you can wait until i40 is post on the multiplay forums and see if someone has a spare socket 775 CPU they could bring to the event for you to try - if no-one here has as spare obviously.

Are you there on Thursday Chug? If so, there's a Core 2 Quad Q9550, Yorkfield Core, S775 in my spare rig wot CC will be using. You can rip that out and try it if you don't have any joy before then. Alternatively, a fight to the death between you & CC would be good entertainment to claim the rig. Two men enter, one man leaves....  Smiley

I've got stuff to do in the next week that I'm reluctant to use the work PC for, so I'm trying to get it fixed ASAP (also I am bored to death in the evenings otherwise). I've ordered a new fairly cheap mobo which should be here tomorrow, and if it turns out that's the issue then I can chuck the old one in the post with its warranty and ebay the replacement. If not, it's a new processor (and while I'm at it, graphics card just for fun). If replacing that doesn't work I will cry and assassinate Cruel (twice just to be sure) before he can steal your rig.

I can bring my weirdly-halting-when-under-heavy-I/O 775 board which I have recently exchanged. It will boot though I can't tell how long it will last once up.

So, new board arrived today and I quickly got to work swearing at all the case screws for being stuck in the case. Eventually managed to fit it, put all my old components back in and close the case despite some truly bizarre socket location positions.

Nothing appears on the screen. I hear two faint beeps, with the same timing as before.

Processor problem, anyone?
Also, this is a brand new board (so it better damn well not be a bios problem) and the bios is made by award, so I reckon those two beeps aren't a beep code at all.

Hm. The beeps usually do come from the BIOS (the beeper starts "off"), hence your processor must still be able to execute the BIOS code. If your CPU was buggered there'd be no beeps at all. So, RAM?

Is your Graphics board powered? (PCIE Power plug?) Maybe your PSU's PCIE +12V rail gave out.

Hmm. Tried switching around the ram again, but had no effect until I tried it with no sticks in, at which point it stopped beeping altogether. It also stopped behaving nicely when I'd press the power button after it was on (previously there would be a bit of a delay before it would turn off, then it would just not turn off at all). Went through all the stick combinations again and it's now turning off nicely again, but not beeping at all when it used to.

Huh?

Edit: graphics card is definitely powered (fan is spinning, and besides it screams at me if it isn't) Tried my friend's card with the old mobo and got the same result suggesting it wasn't the card, and the fact it's now in a new rail suggests it wasn't that either. Besides, the lights in my keyboard stay dead, which means it's not making it to windows.

Until you have tried a new CPU I would be inclined to think it's that. I believe the BIOS needs the CPU. It will tell you in the form of beeps if you try to boot it up with no memory in (i.e. you should get something different)

Plan is now to drive it over to techy friend's house on Sunday and swap/change everything but the processor. I haven't got much left to eliminate as the problem, but if it's a weird combination of many things that should catch it too.

Give me a working PC by Thursday or give me death, etc...

Just in case. You may be interested in these CPU-Motherboard bundels from CCL....

_______________________________________________________________________________________________
CCL's Pre-Assembled Motherboard Bundles

There's no beating the feeling of satisfaction from building your own system, but sometimes a little help along the way is very welcome. Not only that, but unless you have a wide array of test kit, diagnosing hardware failures when occasionally they do occur, can be very difficult.

So as a welcome addition we are now offering a selection of Mainboard, CPU and Memory kits that are pre-assembled and tested. No more worrying if the processor is the right way round or whether there is too much thermal paste on the cooler – simply unbox and install into your existing (or nice and shiny new) case and away you go!

An ideal way to quickly upgrade your existing system, and a great starting point for a new self build. These bundles are all based around our most popular core products to provide excellent value and quality, with a wide choice processors, both Intel and AMD.

Just in case you needed anymore encouragement all these bundles come supplied with 3 Years warranty as standard

Right, the experiment is complete and the culprit has been determined (at least, seems to have been). Any guesses before I get home and order the new part?
