How much syntax are we talking tea, because I mean I know people are stupid but if they can't handle a few extra characters you need to take them out back and put them down for the good of the company.

Of course I would assume that the syntaxing is optional - so if people are unsure or uncomfortable using it then they can leave it out.

If you introduce almost any kind of system you will probably have to teach them how to use it/maintain it at some point anyway. (Even with webpages made in word)

That ^^

As much as a simple free do it yourself tool will work for now, you really should be planning fo rthe future.

Example, we have a client who still need to run MS Access97, because they created their own bespoke database in it, which grew to a massive size.  Now they can't live without it and it just makes our support a nightmare regarding it, as no-one knows how the bloody thing works, and any issues we cant even push up to microsoft either.....

As I said earlier:

Whenever I see developments like this I worry. The end result is always nearly something highly bespoke, understood by only one or two people, hard to maintain and impossible to extend and scale without huge effort. That's not to mention any security concerns that may also apply.

BTW our company of 15 is currently impementing sharepoint.....

What he means is, I'm implementing SharePoint in the company we work for. Wink

From what I've read, SharePoint does sound like what you need. More specifically, SharePoint Foundation (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=49c79a8a-4612-4e7d-a0b4-3bb429b46595&displaylang=en) would fit your needs, and that product is free. It can be installed on Windows Vista or 7 as well as server versions of Windows, but does require a 64-bit operating system as well as a decent amount of RAM.

Or.... if it grows and his primary role becomes this, and the larger organisation decide to roll out a company wide system abolishing TTs setup, his role will actually be redundant,...... Sad

Also...can you access external websites from work? If so - why not just host the sharepoint externally?

I've never used it...so I don't know what the security is like (if that is an issue, but i'd imagine it would be fairly good. just checked - SSL security) but it looks like it just runs on a web interface. I'm sure you could pester your boss for it if it's really that useful and you can get your colleagues on board.

http://www.sharepointhosting.com/
That site has a whole load of video tutorials explaining how to do stuff (so you wouldn't need to train anyone Cheesy )

Advantages:
- probably does what you need it to do
- less work for Teatime
- don't need to argue with IT department
- can get a free trial apparently

Disadvantages:
- monthly fee
- requires external web access

Obviously there's other hosts out there that do this - so maybe have a look around.

This sounds like a job for google docs!
Another dead end. Access to the internet requires PW, which not everybody has. Must be local network.
Oh, and since the data will include sales figures and the like I strongly doubt anybody would approve storing those outside the house Wink

I'm sure that allowing web-access to one specific domain (the one with sharepoint) is considerably easier than installing and maintaining a system locally.

Plus it looks like sharepoint may be reasonably secure. what with its SSLs and permissions etc.

SSL might keep third parties out, but not the ones hosting.
And if the IT-department is to lazy/swamped/stuck-up/whatever to allow him installing local programs, I doubt they'll dig holes in their firewall. Tongue

Just how many people on WDG are IT professionals actually ?

I'm pretty damn impressed with the replies to T's posts, very usefull comments !

Anyways T, if you're still thinking of trying to build your own interface/maintenance system. I'd definitly give it a shot using Jquery.
I'd try to use Jquery (javascript based library, if you don't know it allready) to read .txt files from the webserver (wich your Word clients could read/write to) and display em in the page you want.

It's pretty damn dirty, but  it might be the happy medium between fast editing and *maintenance* you're looking for.
(The word I was looking for in German is "Mittelweg/goldene Mitte" btw).

Just my 2 cents.
