Can you not get your manager to make a fuss about it? It's obviously something which will improve your departments efficiency, for very little cost. How many hours a week are you currently spending maintaining the HTML page?

My manager wouldn't care. For one he doesn't care at all about our specific department, but on top of that he's the kind of manager who thinks along the line of "I expect the work to get done". He doesn't care how, and hence 'efficiency' is not part of his vocabulary.
Don't waste your breath saying that's stupid.

Alternately : http://www.tiddlywiki.com/ it's entirely html and javscript, so needs no special servers to work - Just dump it on your web server.

Looks interesting. Will give it a closer look, but this will certainly require a bit more orientation.

Thanks, egg, but unless my (highly) limited understanding of Sharepoint is way off this is in every aspect NOT what I've inquired.

You work for an international company, and you want an intranet to share data and to make it searchable, allowing users to upload information from there PC's with limited applications.

hmmmmm sounds like sharepoint to me Wink

Seriously, sharepoint is what 'the company' needs.

If you are expected to do this on your own with no little to no software (or admin rights) then your being asked to do something out the scope of your role, and serisouly doubt you can deliver what your asking.

Unless you are a web guru and can code all that in notepad  Undecided

Okay, egg, next week I will explain to my manager that he should please request our (national) IT department to purchase and implement sharepoint so that our department with its 15 workers can store and exchange some info and data.

Taking sharepoint out thats exactly what you need to do, go ask them.... You have an IT department for this exact reason, to service the IT requests of the company.  They will decide on the best course of action for your needs, and what matches company policies.

Trying to do this on your own is, as I said, out of your scope.

BTW our company of 15 is currently impementing sharepoint.....

Commiserations on having a shitty manager Sad

The thing about content management is that it's a universal problem, in your multinational company there are bound to be loads of other departments that could make good use of it.

Were you asked to maintain this page, or is it just something you've been doing because it helps your department work better?

The thing about content management is that it's a universal problem, in your multinational company there are bound to be loads of other departments that could make good use of it.

True enough. However, I assume there are numerous reasons, some good, some stupid. We have an odd mix of corporate conformity vs. autonomy of the outlets; the latter being a good thing in some regards but bad in others. On top of that it's probably an hierarchical thing since a lot of us grunts (=salespeople in the stores) might be expected to know some data, but I guess management shies away from the cost it would take to back that up with a decent infrastructure, given that this data is wasted on 80% of those people.

I guess this will change over time, but it will still take some time. And since this will definitely have some less pleasant side-effects I can't say I'm all too eager.

Were you asked to maintain this page, or is it just something you've been doing because it helps your department work better?

The latter. It's simply a small "tool" to make life easier for ourselves, and as such I'm happy to do it.

For the time being I have decided to go with a number of unified html-pages with a nav-table on top. A bit more work to maintain, but hopefully not too many people will screw around with the links.

Concerning this a question for you web-wizards:
Is there a way to link to a local txt-file so that this file is opened in the associated application (e.g. notepad) instead of the browser?

It should open with whatever application this type of files are associated with, regardless of how or where it is linked to. The file associations can be different for different pc's though.

... unless it's a text file which the browser thinks it can display on its own. So unless you can say "don't open that", which would be done by way of passing an 'application/x-octet-stream' mime-type, which you couldn't do in a link last time I checked.

So no, wouldn't think so.

Did you try that TiddlyWiki? I had a play with it and it seemed easy to use. Editing pages in the browser is much easier for people to understand than getting them to edit in word and upload them to your server.

Agreed, it's actually quite awesome for its simplicity.
Still have to give it a closer look, get a better understanding of its features and limits. I also ran into some minor trouble under FF with it not correctly saving changes.

One potential issue is the use of Javascript and how our browsers at work will handle that (We are using older versions of IE).

Still, very promising. Thanks for pointing me towards it.

Gave it a closer look. Good, but for my purposes it has it pros and cons.
The moment you start doing any kind of formatting within the text you leave the territory of what's comprehensible for the layman who might want to (or has to) edit the text any further.
Code:
The following features are included with the standard download of ~TiddlyWiki:
!Browsers
* You can ''view'' ~TiddlyWiki files on all major desktop browsers on Windows,
Macintosh and Linux and many mobile browsers such as the Apple iPhone and the Nokia 770/N800
Something like that - as simple as it may be for nerds like us - is already beyond the understanding of the casual user.
(Yes, I know there are formatting plug-ins, but those again are aimed at a different group of users)

That's something which makes using a tool as ugly as Word so attractive, because it works fairly well as a WYSIWYG-editor even a layman can use (especially since far more people are familiar with the basic features).

I'm still not ruling out Tiddly. I like the presentation and the clear structure (not to mention the far more professional look).
