I used WMP back in the day but it used to crash my ancient computer so I had to get rid! Now its one of the first things I remove on a clean Windows install .

If you use Media Monkey you need to make sure you have quicktime installed as it uses the drivers from quicktime to play some files.

Really? Quicktime is awful and thats fairly shoddy to just lift its drivers, are you sure its not the quicktime codecs and stuff you are talking about?

It just uses the codecs for m4a support I think, easiest way to get them is to install the program. It's also possible to set it up to use other codecs if you wish.

lol need an edit there cv. But yeah I wouldn't install quicktime for that. Download a proper codec bundle with the free versions of quicktime and realplayer codecs.

I use media monkey for listening to podcasts and syncing my ipod, I'd recommend it over itunes as long as you just have an ipod or any other mp3 player and not an iphone/ipod touch since it does everything you'd need itunes to do (except put images/video on your ipod) and it comes without all the extra shit that itunes installs on your computer.

I also use winamp lite without any plugins/winamp agent/etc for listening to single songs/wavs or for listening to music in the background while doing something else like playing a game 'cause it starts up and plays almost instantly and uses very little resources.

If you were intent on using itunes then I'd recommend following this guide so that you install only the components you need.

If you need quicktime, I'd go with Disco's suggestion and download QT Lite or a full codec pack like this, or both. Don't use QT Lite if you plan on using itunes though since itunes requires the full version of QT to be installed.

Had pretty much the same situation as Ringel: used winamp but needed iTunes for my iPod, since I didnt know any other program could. But now I shall give media monkey a look

Foobar 2000, not really bothered customising it much ... it's pretty good out of the tin. Nice simple interface and it doesn't use many resources.

I don't listen to that much music on my PC though.

I like the simple Foobar 2000 interface but might go looking for mods now I've seen that Xchange one. Got enough monitors that I can leave it up on one of them if it's on

2 days in and I'm having issues with winamp, disapearing library window that only comes back when I change skin and that even though "Always on top" is checked, it isn't...I think I'm going to have to move over to Foobar
