So... there's a new blogpost, but it really wasn't that special.
Valve teasing at the pixelcount update and announcing that they've aquired tf2wiki.net.

But it seems like there's stuff going on in the background:
Apparently the guy behind tf2wiki.net sold the domain http://flippa.com/auctions/97028/bids for a juicy 70k, which seems kinda odd. When asked after that in the new wiki, an admin answered with this:
You are missing nothing. That's exactly what's occured. We told the original owner, he demanded over $90k from Valve. We all thought this was unreasonable and thus, because all wiki information is public, we transferred the articles over. This was at least more than one month ago and as such, we assume he's attempting to rake his money back and leave the new owner to loose it all. Pilk has reported this to the auction site and as such we are waiting for a reply. -- Smashman... (t • s) 11:49, 1 July 2010 (UTC) (http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Help_talk:Move_information#Auction.3F)

So uhh, Valve just took the content? I'm not sure I like that...

And also it seems like somebody is busy 'resigning' other users of the old wiki: http://tf2wiki.net/w/index.php?namespace=2&title=Special:RecentChanges

You'd rather they paid an admin $90k for public information?
It would seem all the other admins are onboard with it anyway.

Exactly, the guy who owns the site just regged the domain and whacked some open source wiki software on it ... all the content that actually makes the site valuable was public domain.

One way to look at it. The other way were to say Valve simply gave the wiki a new home, since by selling the domain the continuance of the content was by no means guaranteed.
I'm positive most authors and contributors are quite happy to have their work and efforts not only secured but now even sanctioned as "official".

its standard wiki practice that all content submitted is public domain and the guy in charge didn't really do anything bar add increasingly annoying ads to monetise it. HarriL btw is the old owner removing admins and banning people there. Shawner at a guess is maybe the new owner. I'm not sure what HarriL is trying to achieve removing the admins perhaps he doesn't understand that wikibots from other wikis don't need admin access to copy stuff. Perhaps he's angry maybe he's bored. I don't think it really matters the old owner was a dick Valve have saved the wiki and admins from even worse advertising (it was sold as something that could see more ad placement throughout) and copied open source info about their own game. The old owner afterwards then ripped off someone on that auction site. As for Valve kicking this off by either trying to acquire the wiki or save it from ads the wiki contains info on their game and a lot of art assets copied out of the gcfs, if they were douchebags they could have legitimately closed it down instead. The response was probably the best course of action

The only downside is the contribution logs are lost and its doubtful those will ever be seen again so its not really possible to see who did what anymore. But its not like I ever really check on a wiki who wrote it, the anonymity makes that pointless anyway.

Disclaimer: I don't really know about the backgrounds of tf2wiki.

Exactly, the guy who owns the site just regged the domain and whacked some open source wiki software on it ... all the content that actually makes the site valuable was public domain.
There's more to creating a community than just installing a software on a server. And mediawiki is by no way simply download & install, believe me.

The other way were to say Valve simply gave the wiki a new home, since by selling the domain the continuance of the content was by no means guaranteed.
Afaik he sold it after Valve said no.

Shawner at a guess is maybe the new owner.
He's an 'Bureaucrat': http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Team_Fortress_Wiki:Bureaucrats#Bureaucrats

I'm not sure what HarriL is trying to achieve removing the admins perhaps he doesn't understand that wikibots from other wikis don't need admin access to copy stuff. Perhaps he's angry maybe he's bored.
My guess? He banned them in order to silence them and the user page is kind of the personal representation of a user.

The old owner afterwards then ripped off someone on that auction site.
100% agreed.

The only downside is the contribution logs are lost and its doubtful those will ever be seen again so its not really possible to see who did what anymore. But its not like I ever really check on a wiki who wrote it, the anonymity makes that pointless anyway.

Logs are lost, the status of moderators etc. are restored though.

I'm not sure what else I would have preferred...I don't see better solution to be honest, but like I said...just taking the stuff feels 'mean' for a lack of better words.

the guy was being unreasonable though, the price he was asking was for the monetised site something that was upsetting the members and that valve had no interest in, also valve had moral and legal right to do what they did. Also lol

Admin7 is a bot he set up that does nothing but delete links to the new site. Because thats going to stop people from jumping ship?
