I have an ancient laptop, the hard drive is crashing pretty hard lately. I was thinking of putting in some kind of cheap solid state drive? I only need about 4 gb of storage. Probably less. What should I be looking at

EDIT: I'm not actually bothered about speed.

SSD is a great choice for a speedboost to older laptops (http://www.laptopmag.com/advice/tips/can-an-ssd-save-an-old-notebook.aspx?page=3) . There arn't really any smaller, cheaper options that are actually any good unfortunately.

Nor are there any good alternatives other then buying very-slightly-faster RAM. Laptops are nigh-totally-impossible to upgrade!

Not a bad suggestion for £70 (although those ones I don't know what they rate the speed at...), prices are not what they once were - but deals do come around now and again.

PuppyLinux as an example can do that if you were serious. Yeah, it does increase speed Smiley but not really worth it unless the laptop is really old and you're okay with Linux.

Yeah, actually I just booted Damn Small Linux to see what the speed increase would be like, typing this from it right now. The laptop is pretty ancient... Thankfully DSL takes up only about 70meg of ramdisk.
