Windows 7 doesn't let you back up over a network unless you have pro or ultimate editions.

I've got windows 7 premium and use Cobian to backup to a netgear duo NAS.  Cobian can compress backups but I just use it to transfer the files (full backup monthly and daily incrementals after that) which allows the use of file manager to view and recover as necessary. I didn't want my backups to have to rely on any specific application for recovery.

On a similar topic, whats good for creating an image of my hard drive; I'd forgotten how much on PITA reinstalling everything was and would rather have an image of a clean install I can boot from. Ghost does a job I hear, but want something free preferably...

Well, I use Acronis TrueImage for all this - nightly incremental backups of the whole drive to a network location (quick and saves space), with monthly differentials. It's both my file backup and my restore system.
It's not free, but I didn't pay for it Smiley

Otherwise, there's CloneZilla - an Open Source Ghost - http://clonezilla.org/

Doesn't the windows 7 one do this for free? You can create an image of a drive and restore it using the windows 7 DVD. (Providing you have windows 7)

would rather have an image of a clean install I can boot from.
I did something like that a few times and in the end never really used it.

Reinstalling the OS is not what takes time, it's installing all the apps, patches and updates and customize everything to my wishes. Of course you could install the OS and all your programs and do the customization  and THEN make the image, but in fact that will make it more tedious, because now after a reinstall you have to check which programs to update, which programs still to add and so on.

So in the end I've found that a clean install from ground up - while a bit tiresome - is still the best.

As for backups: Complementary I would strongly advice on having/creating a separate partition for user data and try to put as much of your important stuff on that, preferably in a few folders with a clear structure. And since this doesn't work well for Windows 'User'-folders I recommend to use those as few as possible. But it's fairly easy to move the "My Documents" folder (along with a few others).

Thats what I was going to do tbh, do a minimal install and get the most common apps installed (FF, Steam, iTunes, avast, mumble, CCC) and then make the image. These days most programmes notify of updates and do it themselves (FF. iTunes, avast, Steam etc) and the ones that don't (mumble, CCC) I can probably redownload quicker then it would take to reinstal everything. We'll see I guess, as I said, I'm experimenting atm; if it doesn't work I won't do it again Tongue.

Thats what I've been doing since the raid fail around Crimbo; one hard drive for system files and one for media with weekly backups to my external drive. Now I have 2x250gig in RAID1 for system and then a 1TB for everything else (games, music etc). It made more sense to me to keep the two things seperate to be honest; makes backing up easier and you just have to worry about the one drive. It's just anoying that even though I install games to a different drive, the savegames still end up on the C: drive in my documets -_-.

Move it! Don't quite know how to do this in Vista, but it was fairly simple in XP with TweakUI and it's even easier in Win7 by adjusting paths to common folders.

I've not heard good things about the built in one, apparently it craps out if you have more than around 150 GB installed and takes DAYS to do a backup. I remember trying it and on the full system image backup that would restore partitions it wanted to backup my media drive as well as my SSD system drive, with no option to select otherwise.
Does it even do Incremental/differential backups?

This is not to say that i've had a flawless experience with Acronis either, I think the restore CD might have issues dealing with RAID arrays, it would freeze up during the restore. Fortunately at that time I'd also taken a Ghost image which I could restore fine)

I did a clean install last week, manually installing to a single partition (to avoid setup making the 100GB bitlocker boot partition) which makes SSD alignment easier on reimaging. .
