God help me, I'm trying TalkTalk because of the much cheaper deal.... I hope it works out.
I'd suggest
Freedom2Surf instead. They're owned by TalkTalk but provide business broadband, so the service and support are really very good.
That who you're with atm? (Probably wouldn't matter for you too much considering you pretty much live at the exchange :p)
One thing worth bearing in mind is that it's quite unlikely that switching providers will increase your internet speed as your sync speed is only 4mbps - with the exception of your ISP setting your line profile (as me/zarf mentioned) the rest of it is down to the cable between your house and the exchange.
(Unless you switch to cable - which doesn't use that link)
Well yes and no. Whist your correct in the your line speed is mainly determined by the link to the exchange (LLU) it can depend on what (whose) equipment you connect to within the exchange.
Some companies put their own in, other piggy back off BT.
For example, doomwolf is on ADSL, zen internet. His line has been pretty crap of late, finally zen have moved him over to another part of the exchange (he aint here to get the full details off him) and his connection is about 1mb better off.
To qualify that, I was having issues on my ADSL Max connection on the 20cn DSLAM equipment at the exchange. When BT moved me over the the new 21cn MSAN, I found my attenuation lowered, my sync speed increased (giving me a 4.5Mbps BRAS profile instead of 4Mbps) and interleaving was switched off which improved my gaming pings. However, I then requested from Zen for my line to be regraded from ASDL Max to ADSL2+ (up to 20Mbps if you live next door to the exchange - I'm miles away). The results of that are a mixed bag. My sync speed dropped slightly, resulting in a return to the 4Mbps BRAS profile, but my upload speed has doubled. I've now also got another issue where the BT equipment seems to have increased by target snr to 9db from the default 6db, again resulting in a slower sync speed, but it has kept me in the band for a 4Mbps profile. I'll probably need to ask Zen to get BT to reset my target snr. I'm also considering moving to a LLU ISP like be* just so I can get away from BT's overzealous DSLAM/MSAN equipment.
If none of that meant anything to you, you're not on an ADSL connection.
