Fastpath: DSL usually transmits like this:

Packets: [111111] [222222] [333333]
Xmit: [123][123][123][123][123][123] (or something along those lines, throw in some error correction and bit-balancing)

For this interleaving you modem has to queue up some packets, slice&dice them, then send them off.
Fastpath disables this interleaving. This means the modem has less chance to "balance" the line (leading to more transmission errors), but your packets complete the transit to the DSLAM faster (from there on it's ethernet all over again)...

Interesting. I will be learning about this all in detail next year some time...

For now, all I know is that Virgin are a teerrrrribble ISP for gaming where I am. In a mid-to-large town, I get loads of drops, lagspikes, the lot. Lost my connection for several days recently. Not fun.

Yeah I wasn't very clear earlier when i complained about speed but you really take a hit at peak times on virgin, they're oversubscribed. It was crawling web browsing on sunday afternoons when everyone and their mum is on ebay or whatever they do on a sunday

I know that the lower ping = good, I was talking about the packet loss error correction thing? What impact would that have?

Depending on your line quality, I estimate something between nothing and loads of packet loss (=people teleporting over the place) in gaming and a overall decrease of download speed in general.
Hard to say in general...

I'll speak to them tonight and report back, always thought I was missing shots I should've hit because of lag so that could help Wink. It's only the teleporting players that worries me, if I'm downloading something I usually leave it overnight anyway so not really all that bothered about that.

Thanks all, karma all round <3.

I've got ADSL with BT. Been with them for a good few years now. Tend to get 4 to 5 meg. Every so often it does fall on it's face and I get less than 3meg. Same routien every time. use on line form on BT site to raise my conswerns at their service. majically service gets better. Then simply ignor their follow up call.

Contract length is 12 months. You should get the shiny new mk3 black wirless hub in with the deal as well.

Alternativly, why not click on this link to "Think Broadband" and have a look at the list of providers.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/isps.html

Or you can go to this link and tell them what your looking for...

I personally use freeola, you might not of heard of them but they are aboslutely excelent, but probably a little more expensive then those large companies with them cheap deals.

I remember that my inernet suddenly dropped to around 6kb/s and I was pretty annoyed so I just aboutt managed to email freeola about the issue. About 20 minutes later they phoned me (incase my email didn't work due to the internet problems) and told me they contacted BT to fix the problem and they managed to get it fixed in just over an hour (if I remember correctly).

UK doesn't use many capped services unless you have really low speeds.

I'm currently on Virgin at my parents, reasonably good service - but note the download throttling - so good to schedule those downloads for night or early morning only - details here: http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html (this seems to be correct, in any case at least they're up front about it). They're limited in coverage though.

I'd also recommend not going with Tiscali, but my friend did have good service with them for ages so it probably more depends how good their setup is to your house.

Be is meant to be okay at least in the sense they're one of the only ones fighting stupid ISP laws, not sure what their service is like though.

I'm going to be looking for some kind of service when I leave home, not sure but I might go for a less regulated high upstream service to sort some stuff I need to upload consistently. Upload speeds are crap all over otherwise but you get what you pay for I guess!

About 10GB a month, normally an hour or 2 gaming a day + internet. Steam/other large downloads on top of that.

My usage has skyrocketed since I started downloading Hi-Def.
Even at 720p you're looking at 1.15GB per 40minute TV ep, and around 7GB for a movie.
