I received a full on letter from the house of commons this week which goes as follows:

Dear Mr Sharp,

Thank you for contacting me about the Digital Economy Bill.

For nearly twelve years, the Government has neglected this crucial area of our economy. We believe a huge amount needs to be done to give the UK a modern regulatory environment for the digital and creative industries. Whilst we welcome aspects of the bill there are other areas of great concern to us.

We want to make sure that Britain has the most favourable intellectual framework in the world for innovators, digital content creators and high tech businesses. We recognise the need to tackle digital piracy and make it possible for people to buy and sell digital intellectual property online. However, it is vital that any anti-piracy measures promote new business models rather than holding innovation back. This must not be about propping up existing business models but creating an environment that allows new ones to develop. That is why we were opposed to the original clause 17 and still are opposed to clause 29 which props up ITV regional news with BBC License Fee payers' money.

The Government's failure to introduce the Bill until the eleventh hour of this Parliament has given rise to considerable concern that we no longer have the time to scrutinise the many controversial and detailed measures outline in their proposals. We fully appreciate these concerns. However in certain areas, including measures to allow website blocking in certain carefully proscribed circumstances, there has been substantial debate in the House of Lords. I also believe they should be debated in the House of Commons before we agree to them, and this will happen on 6 April 2010. Only if we are confident that they have been given the scrutiny that they deserve will we support them.

It is also worth pointing out that many of the fears about the Bill's proposals are not entirely accurate. People won't be disconnected from the internet without due process. And it will only be a small minority of people who consistently infringe copyright who are disconnected, not the average person who happens to have done so once or twice. Even then, they may be able to reconnect using another ISP immediately and without penalty.

Please rest assured that my colleagues in the Shadow Culture, Media and Sport and Shadow Business, Innovation and Skills teams will do everything in their power to work towards legislation that strengthens our digital sector and provides the security that our businesses and consumers so desperately need.

It's a bit sticky, but essentially if some one at an address partakes in download piracy, then that address can become black listed. Possably throttled back or cut off from the WEB. So if you move house it's another thing to think about. Or if you live in a shared house.

It's Mandelson. Follow the money and it becomes clear. The entertainment industry is all for it. Indipentant IT experts, BT and Talk Talk all say it's badly thought through. So if I were to guess Mandelson has taken an unrelated payment and is just happening to push through a law that favors his new best friends. Even though the experts in the field say it's a crock of shit.

Might be worth investing in a satellite dish for internet soon.. You can get good speeds these days with a cheapish dish (providing you know how to set it up right)
I experimented with it a while back and it was super fast, just not very reliable.. Was also free and un-monitored then.. gone are those days (although there are some networks that are free but limited to intranet style systems)

Although don't expect to be able to use it for gaming. Pings are usually in the 500 - 1000ms range.

BEGIN PHYSICS
Geostationary satellites orbit at about 36,000km (as that's where they have to be to stay in the same place in the sky). Satellite uses microwave radiowaves which are part of the electromagnetic spectrum and as such travels at the speed of light which is approximately 3*10^8 m/s which is 300,000km/s therefore for information to do the distance from the satellite dish -> satellite -> satellite dish (72,000km) will take ~240ms. And that's only for a one-way communication. In terms of actually pinging a server - you're looking at at ~480ms and that doesn't include all the extra stuff like routing, switching, error correction, modulation/de-modulation etc. etc. Essentially it's a long way compared to 970km from Land's End to John o' Groats in the UK.

Yes it is, but look at the bright side. When the earth will be shattered to pieces due to some weird experiment, you will be among the people who will be rescued and launched into space to search for new home, because only people who give a damn about stuff like that are allowed to push buttons on space ships.
