Total War is gaining ground on the Civ side Millicent, that's one reason to avoid a "merge", haha, since it technically already has happened - Shogun: Total War had no overhead map, it was PURELY the set piece battles!

Nah, I remember the Shogun overhead maps, basic though they were.  Perhaps you only played the demo?

Ham and pineapple and myself have played loads of Civ 4 BTS the past few months and its been brilliant. Civ 5 is looking equally awsome but in a different way. NO stacks of dooom!!!!! and it seems they are trying to get rid of the stupid number of units you get by the end of the game. the combat has always been my weakness in civ and the bit i hate the most due to the stacks but i love the rest of it

I too suck at the combat in Civ4 - despite the fact that I love playing the game...anyone want another multiplayer sesh sometime?

I suck at all aspects of Civ, but it's still fun to play. Usually with a gentleman's agreement not to pwn me

id actually quite like to play alpha centauri with people sometime.

The problem I had with Civ4 is you can lose basically by terrain placement (also no playing as india for speedy workers!). The big game we had, Milli lost because he got placed on a continent of tundra, I lost because I started in a jungle (ffs!), deadly lost because he was so far from all other civs and their scouts the barbs could only spawn on his border and rape him. The game itself didn't feel like we were making progress, i'm still a bit nooby and I have been reasonably good at civ in the past so some more training would help, but in the above situation, if all players are equally good, final was still going to win because he got the best placement.

In AC the planet is a lot more uniform, you get bonus resources but generally you have no significant advantages from various different starting places.

this is why the best way to play civ is to "fix" the game before hand. i know it ruins the surprise a little but load the map put world editor on and force the spawn areas yourself and maybe even manipulate it until it is fair. this helps a LOT esp for multiplayer.

We should try a multiplayer Civ 4 again, this time with a smaller "fixed" 2 continent map and quick tech progress.  Should be far more fun if we can actually find each other.  I'm now free most evenings from about 9ish till midnight.

Edit: It's a game you can play with a screaming baby in one hand, can't do that in TF2

Sounds good Milli - I can probably do most evenings as well. I've not actually used the world editor - personally I like the idea of having no idea where I am or what's around me but if it helps to even things up a bit then sure.
