Went off to the Anarchists' Bookfair today

http://anarchistbookfair.org.uk/

Haven't been for years, kept missing it. Said 'hi' to a few people, saw others who I thought I recognised but had no idea what they were called or exactly where I knew them from so it felt a bit awkward just walking up to them.

There were many many bookstalls (appropriately). And many many anarchist organisations represented. I suspect there may be one organisation per anarchist in the UK. Many of the organisations started off bigger but got smaller as variances in doctrine took their toll. Even the bookfair itself hadn't escaped. It was the 30th year but apparently 'a deep split in the collective over the maths'  Huh? and the fact that one year there were two, meant it couldn't really be celebrated as the 30th birthday, but hey.

I remember when I used to do more stuff we'd be critiqued by such organisations; in some way we'd  have fallen short of some anarchic principle. We'd respond by writing a critique of the critique. The critique and the critique of the critique would then be critiqued in various small radical publications with circulations of about four (author, co-author, girlfriend; the writer was usually male unless there was a feminist perspective, flatmate) and that's how it would go. And all the while we were doing stuff that attracted thousands.

I bought a poster.

I attended one workshop on the German Autonomists (someone I knew, knew one once) and Introduction to Anarchism which ended up in a debate between an audience member (anarchist) and a couple of marxists about the nature of power and the proletariat. I think they were actually in agreement.

I looked through the books and wondered how many were actually going to be read once they were got home and away from the giddy excitement and enthusiasm engendered by the Bookfair. I've already learnt my lesson here.

Anyhow, it was interesting

In many ways Cheesy

They also specifed that Introduction to Anarchism was 'a "beginners" type of meeting and not a place to argue the finer points of theory'.

Another leaving drinks tonight.

People are being made redundant all over the place. Take your eye off someone, next time you look they're gone. One of the new managers they're bringing in gave a pep talk to the New Business Development Team.

He told them the boat was leaving and they needed to be on it otherwise they'd get left behind.

Last time the new CEO told us it was a bus.

So, is it a bus we're supposed to be on or a boat? Which? Or maybe it's a tandem there'll be so few of us left by the end. I don't know.

Not sure if I get travel sick worse or sea sick.

Got given a Ferrari driving experience in January for my 40th, finally got round to doing it today.   Went to Goodwood which isn't your usual car racing circuit and had a great time despite the rain, got to play with a very knackered BMW on the skid pan,
took a classic Ferrari 308 for a spin (almost literally) round the circuit, which was not all that fast but still great fun
got driven round the circuit by a professional driver in a (faster) Mini Cooper S which he almost came off the circuit trying to race a Mustang.  Also got very wet go carting despite being dressed in 2 layers of rubber clothing
.  All run by Mithril Racing who were very organized and friendly.  All the drivers were old racing drivers, the youngest must of been in his 60s.  I have told Mrs Bystander to start saving for my 50th birthday.

....and here's some car porn which you could drive round Goodwood if your pockets are deep enough

I've had my first few moments of success in my current work. Most of the days I feel like I made my boss expect more of me - I was so confident and cool at the job interview. I still have a feeling they're not gonna renew the contract, so I'm having difficulties convincing myself I should make friends at the work place. But at least till they found out what kinda mistakes I've secretly made (like drawing columns or beams that cannot support a structure), I think I'm off well and feeling pretty good. Pret-tay, pret-tay, pretty good.

On behalf of Nanowrimo I must already wonder in awe how someone can write 1700 words a day. I've been sitting, writing about 2 hours and I have less than 800 words that haven't even been reviewed. If I'd only had the forsight of realising that if I had written it all in English, I could ask for WDG people's opinion. But now I must trust my illiterate Finnish friends to do the reading. And Buissu.

It normally takes about 6 months to get fully settled in to a new job and get to know people and feel comfortable in the work you're doing. I found it a lot easier in my first job after Uni because it was aimed at fresh graduates so expectations were fairly low of your ability to 'work' (in terms of coming into a position and achieving results quickly) but it felt tougher and took a bit longer in my new job (steep learning curve in the work I was doing, trying to find the right people in a much bigger company etc.).

So I went to see Thor this evening. Better than I was expecting, plenty of slapstick humour.

On the way home though the tram I was on hit someone. Not having the morbid curiosity that most of my fellow passengers had I decided that instead of standing around to look at the person who got hit I'd walk on to the next stop where I could get another tram. It'll probably be in the papers tomorrow anyway (at least the Irish ones) so I'll probably find out more details then.

...And they prolly labeled Yonder apathetic and rude, the fellow tram riders. :/ But yeah, I concur with Berath.

This morning, as I wake up, I am baffled by 2 things I've been pondering while asleep: 1) Why are British among the least depressed people in the world along with the Aussies, Chinese and Mexicans according to a map I saw. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/files/2013/11/depression-rates.jpg Also, I've always been under the prejudice that poor countries don't have depression as much, they live on little things and don't get the existential anxiety that we consumerist so often bear.
2) I saw this news in april but now it's "news" again apparently, since so many webnewspapers have published it just recently - and using a Korean ad photo to represent the family. At least Dailymail informs the reader it's just an ad. The top google search doesn't: http://entertainment.ie/wtf/Chinese-man-divorces-and-sues-wife-over-ugly-children-And-wins/227669.htm

But yea, much ado about nothing this morning, I guess. Gosh I'm late for work!
