I went to a Science Fiction Film Festival at the weekend and saw films.

I saw a lot of little films:

Followed by a big film. This was almost like things are now. People wore little cameras like contact lenses which streamed to their Internet followers. In fact, are we sure it doesn't happen now?

These were brilliant. If we ever have our WDG film evening, we've got to show these. It's got everything a kung fu movie should have, people running up walls and leaping onto roofs, impenetrable wisdom and ancient masters defeating whole armies with two fingers..POW! Oh yes, flying machines too

Don't see this. Beautiful to look at but, um...verging towards pretentious. Lots of soulful looks and meaningful meaningless dialogue about Love, Art, Music and Feelings. All good stuff but here more like art school poseur rather than anything else. I felt like giving them all a shake and sending them off to do an engineering degree somewhere northern.

i've been to sci-fi london twice.

No one deserves to have to do an engineering degree in the north. Doing one in the midlands was tough enough.

Cool. I've been for the past 7 or 8 years I think. Always enjoy going to these festivals and conventions; Sci Fi London, Eastercon, Frightfest and of course iseries.

They're great. Like living in a bubble for a couple of days or so. The most amazing was Worldcon in Tokyo. Four days of convention bubble in JAPAN then the rest of the time exploring the city.

By the way I did an engineering degree in the North

Nope. Got worse. Moved into social work. Little chance of recovery from that

Why would you move from engineering to social work, we need more female engineers not less . I did mine in liverpool i'm not sure what brahms is on about, he was in Loughborough the least fun place to go to uni ever. I mostly went to the anime all-nighters although I got there early last time and did an evening of sci-fi beforehand as well. Probably 2010 last time I went though, can't remember.

Ah yes, been to a couple of the anime all-nighters. They're fun. Probably saw you in 2010 but of course didn't know it

Got made redundant from my engineering job and a couple of unthoughtout career decisions later, ended up in social work. Seemed like a good idea at the time, you know how it is. There are way worse jobs and I suppose it is helping people which is a good and necessary thing. Women in particular seem to fall into caring jobs unless they watch out though my social work course was unusual in that it was almost 50/50. Social care needs more men! Another female engineer I know deliberately left engineering because it was too male, she has just finished studying to be a social worker but is finding it hard to get a job; most want experience.

Engineering was good. Still a member of the IET.

One or two places i've been at were pretty horrible old men's clubs, but not everywhere and it won't change unless more women stick it out. We only have one lady engineer at work shes one of the seniors.

Team of 7 at work includes 3 chartered civil engineers and an incorporated structural engineer.  Just checked and 2 of them are ladies!  The rest of us being horrible old men.

my place is full of old men too, but nice old men. I meant old men who could only converse in grunts about football, and had page 3 pinups on their workbenches.
