Well getting back into the normal routine after my Olympic Volunteering.

It was an interesting experience; hard work with up to 10 hour shifts (including one 30min break), but I got to see some gymnastics when I was doing Access/Seat Control and some basketball too including a bit of the final (had no idea what was going on though).

Access control was a bit manic. In basketball we got so many blaggers, mostly people from Level 4 trying to get into the Level 1 seating area because they saw empty seats. During the gymnastics I was controlling access to the athletes/VIP/Olympic family seating. Now, when anyone important was around, the seating area became the responsibility of Protocol and they took over from us in EVS, chucking us out - a bit like when the FBI steam into town to take over from the local bobbies when a major crime takes place in those crime programmes. On my shift we had John Major, Prince Harry and Kate turning up so I'd been instructed that we'd have to withdraw. Well I wasn't having that. If my team were chucked out they wouldn't get the chance to see any of the competition, just because of fancy pants Protocol prancing around with their airs and graces so I took no notice and let my team stay. And guess what....good job I did because Protocol weren't checking tickets and acreditation so without us being there carrying on, anyone could have walked in.

Anyway by the end of the Games we'd been rewarded with 4 Games Maker pins - one bluish, one bronze, one silver and one gold, a general thank-you pin and an engraved baton (actually quite nice). We also had a wrap party on the Sunday. We'd expected it to be like the Farewell party when the gymnastics finshed....a few bowls of Pringles and lukewarm bottles of coke (though someone claimed they saw a couple of bottles of Fanta), but it turned out to be really nice food, apple tarts with puff pastry, fish kebabs, proper sausage rolls....we were all really surprised. It was also really nice that some of the people who had been in my various teams actually sought me out to say goodbye and thank-you; I thought I'd been a confused and grumpy team leader, so I didn't expect that Smiley

There were loads of army around and a fair few armed police too.

To be honest, I was surprised when we were stood down at the end, in fact I'm waiting further instructions. Just think it through. We all know Boris wants to be Prime Minister, he's denied it so often. Seb ran for Parliament so he's got ambitions in that direction too.

So, what have they done:
1) Recruited 70 000 of the perkiest people in the UK all with a 'can do' attitude and willing to go above and beyond at the drop of a hat; who the public now love of course, velvet glove and all that
2) Enlisted their own private 'security' company employing thousands
3) With a few hundred free tickets to the athletics and the womens beach volleyball, they've got the army on-side
4) Got armed police patrolling strategic parts of the city
5) Any protests or demonstrations near Olympic venues have been instantly and brutally crushed (and the venues are everywhere)
6) Installed ground-to-air missiles all over East London (can you get more obvious than that?)

It's pretty clear what's going to happen after the end of the paralympics.

Enjoy your last days of democratic rule in the UK, people.

Well hopefully they invade Ireland again after taking control. They'd probably do a better job than the lot we have in charge now anyway. (And as a bonus that would make sure sinn fein never get into government here!)

I had the slightly surreal experience of playing Magic the Gathering while listening to opera music yesterday. 'twas fun.

Just came back from our 1 1/2 day trip to Gamescom in Cologne. Was alot of fun, if theres one thing Id complain about its that it was very heavily crowded up to a point where for every big title there the queues were so long I would have waited for atleast 2 hours just to test a game for 10 minutes so I didnt bother with that. I did get to play some Planetside 2 though and that was awesome. We probably spent the most time at the Riot Games booth, they were giving out skincodes to people who beat them at Rock Paper Scissors. Being a superior Dota 2 player, I slammed down the big rock strat and cashed in multiple times against these casual trashbags, sadly I couldnt get my hands on a teemo hat. The highlight was definitely watching the European Regional games, we had some of the best seats (we were right next to Phreak) and the crowd was awesome during the games, lots of fun. You might even see us on the SK vs acer VOD Cheesy

Overall a cool experience, this was my first time going to such a largescale convention and I can happily say there are way uglier nerds than me on this planet (and ironicly theyre all into cosplaying)

Had the area manager pay a visit to our branch on Thursday, first time I'd actually met him as I'm usually off when he turns up.  Seems like a nice guy but I only really got to say hello and goodbye to him as he was locked in the office with the branch manager for most of the time.  I was hoping I'd find out about my application to be Trade Manager at my local branch but didn't hear anything.

This afternoon in the team meeting the reason for the visit was revealed.  There are to be no redundancies at our branch, this was probably helped by the resignation of 2 staff (whilst the branch manager was on holiday) but the 2 staff are to be replaced by 1 part timer and a call center in Yorkshire.  Apparently our area (SE England) has already blown the wages budget for this year.  Our Swedish overlords have decreed the company must make a profit of £3 million so there is no money for any pay rises or new recruitment - or I assume, promotions till the new year.

A move to the Ramsgate branch may still be on the cards but I'll either be sidemoted or it won't happen till Jan.

Oh I also smashed my target for the month, I made more than the kitchen designer which is unusual.

i46...drawing to a close....BOOOOOOOO!

Good hanging out with UKCS. Good seeing Burnalot and Deadly (plus chum), though too brief (get yourselves sorted next year  Tongue).

US TF2 > EU TF2 (EU TF2 prem if we get US teams again: get yourselves sorted next year)

Throat slightly sore from TF2 final, LG vs Classic Mixup. Basically we paid £20,000 for the US to come and roll us, bargain  Cheesy Crowd decided to favour LG since they were the 'underdogs', yes underdogs who steamrolled Epsilon, ok. One team used 2 engies to defend B on Gravelpit, there were lots of use of Heavy plus use of a sentry gun to defend spire on badlands (on top of usual use of pyro, spy, sniper).

I'm back!

Which is... possibly somewhat awkward as I'm not sure I ever properly announced I was going. Cheesy

So, update. I've been up in Edinburgh for the past month working at the Fringe festival. I was originally working on a show called Sparks, which sadly fell through, so I ended up handling tech for a different show instead, called Bat Boy: The Musical. Advertised as Rocky Horror meets My Fair Lady, possibly the stupidest show I've worked on, but it was fantastically good fun. Couple of reviews here and here.

My other piece of news this month is that I received an offer of a place at LAMDA on the Stage Management & Technical Theatre course. I've been trying to get on the course for about two years now, so I'm extremely excited about it. Starting on September 17th, currently looking for somewhere to live in London. Still, should be about for a week or two of gaming before then, so will look forward to joining you guys for a round or two of something again soon. Wink
