wait what they want £768 per ipad? They are half that at retail. Tell them to get stuffed. Giving kids apple products is insane anyway, the android tablets are struggling a bit to be relevant but I doubt theres anything significant an ipad can do for kids that a much cheaper android tablet cant. £200 or less at retail.

There was a thing on the radio the other day about an exam trialed on ipads, the kids apparently liked that the ipad allowed you to highlight stuff and turn the pages, why they are unable to do either with a book was not explained.

And I still don't understand tablets yet, I think they only exist to allow people to show other people they own one. Someone brought one to a job interview the other day, why?

They are iPad 2s and so "only" cost £360ish (plus case, apps, insurance).  I'm actually sold on the educational value, kids will actually want to use them and they are easy to use, it sure beats the BBC Micros that were introduced when I was at school.

Not so sold on the Apple angle though, can't see why they couldn't of gone for a much cheaper Android tablet.  Are 2 (yes 2!!!!!) cameras really necessary and I'm sure you can get an Android tablet with enough battery life to last the entire school day.

xoom 2 isnt any cheaper than the ipad 2 but its got similar/better specs. One important thing to note though. xoom2 is waterproof, ipad2 is not. :/. I would think that waterproofing is high up on the list for kids tablets.

I'm off to Newquay for the weekend and I've got the afternoon off work.

The school I work at want iPads, mostly it's the teachers though. I've seen a few useful educational apps (useful tools like beep tests etc for PE) but in the main everything you could want is also on a PC, where it can be projected on screen.
The way we'd probably have to deploy them is by connecting an Apple TV ( +£100) with an HDMI to VGA converter (+£30) up to our projectors, so that then the Teachers can use Airplay to mirror the iPad screen through the projector (necessitating a Hundred grand in Wireless infrastructure upgrades)
Lot of expense when we could just give them a gyro mouse instead, but actual educational realities don't seem to be a factor. The Teachers want shiny iPads to take home with them.

Our school had an electronic whiteboard (projector + touchscreen) in almost every classroom but they were hardly ever used.

The playbooks are actually pretty good for that - they have a micro-hdmi socket which means you can easily plug them into AV equipment.

Apart from the shiny toy aspect and the fact you can use it to search the web etc. - I really don't see how it's going to improve learning/teaching in schools.

Berath: if you have a laptop, then you probably don't need one. I can see a purpose though for people that have a main desktop and then want something to go on facebook on the sofa or whatever. Personally, I use my playbook when im going away for a weekend and don't want to take a laptop with me and for looking at recipes in the kitchen.
