Chipping means you plug something into the diagnostic port in your car that rewrites the software controlling the engine management and (hopefully) increases the performance/fuel economy.

Yes the Police do thrash their cars but they are also maintained very very well.

From experience I can tell you most emergency services chose their base vehicles to be ready for the tough times of front line service. On a contract we recently won (For a Police Service I will chose to withdraw from mentioning here...) the client has given us some BMW 5-Series for Traffic use - that is, the role you see on those cop TV shows chasing perps in Subarus, etc.

To be honest, from a converter's perspective there is little, if anything, we do to the car during conversion. BMW ban us from touching the CAN-BUS and the looms (The car's electronics and control systems) and only allowing us to hook up the approved pre-made Blue Lighting control system which is "plug and play", anyway. I guess my point is that Emergency Services know their employees thrash their vehicles around and they chose their base vehicles for a reason.

EDIT: You should also note that whilst the vehicle is within the converter's (i.e. us) warranty any breakdowns we have to fix free of charge - assuming the "accident" is covered, of course.

Dunno.

Ask your local police force what base vehicles they use for marked cars. (I say marked because that's what the Freedom for Information act will cover, they have the right not to disclose unmarked car details).

As for where, usually from their local dealer. Some big makes will have a "Blue Light" department specifically for emergency services sales. Namely BMW, Ford, Renault, Volvo, Iveco, Scania, MAN, Skoda, Opel/Vauxhall, Peugeot/Citreon/Fiat (All their vans are the same) have their own department for this.

Been working this week on a production of "Annie". I went in on Monday expecting to assist with lighting, then the sound guy didn't show up. So I've had to fix that instead. Not a fan of the show particularly, but I'm pretty pleased to have made it work, 10 radio mics being bumped between twice as many people, plus rifles and standing mics.

Also the DSM is kinda cute, so... yeah. We'll see.

Drove to work in my father in laws ancient Corsa.  Its been a long, long time since I've driven anything as awful as that.  No power steering, no working stereo and no brakes, at least it has a decent amount of power.

Dammit why do loans now have a 14 day cooling off period.  It's (almost) enough to make me want to go to go to wonga.com and their 4200% APR
