Ok so...I've had a really hectic few weeks what with me destroying my car at the end of last month and trying to sort everything out since then. I've been doing the 2.5 hour drive each way home for the last 3 weeks and it doesn't feel like I've had a lie in for a bloody long time.

I borrowed a car from my mum's friend - an old 1.2l green corsa (her daughters' nicknamed it kermit) which felt like a massive step down from my Focus. I was told when I borrowed it that I should check the oil regularly as it's an old car. Little did I expect that last Friday on my way home the car would get a little too warm (didn't overheat massively - but was higher than it had been since I had it). As I had a long drive to do early on the Saturday morning as I was going home to look at another car I went and checked the oil levels - oil level was absolutely fine. Hmm. I checked the water level - completely empty. I peered inside the oil filler cap - MAYONNAISE! For anyone that doesn't know - if you look inside your oil filler cap and see a brown substance that looks like mayonnaise it usually means your head gasket is going/gone which when it happened to my rover was pretty terminal.

I panicked because I had to get home that morning and as it wasn't even my car I was even more worried, but I filled her with water, grabbed a 2l bottle and filled it with water and set off anyway.

I drove for about an hour and a half and pulled over at the M40 services off the M25 and the car was devoid of water again. Luckily though it got me home - phew! They were also fine about it when I returned the car - which I was really worried about.

I went and saw the new car and I am now the owner of a 2007 Citroen C4 VTR+ Coupe - 1.6l Diesel. I am now exceptionally poor again but it's an awesome car with things like climate control, cruise control, automatic headlights/wipers etc. etc. I picked up my mates when I went into town on Saturday and my girl mates thought it was 'sexy' Cheesy

I am now at the Premier Inn in Thatcham (near Newbury) as I'm on a training course for 3 days this week - course is boring because I complete the exercises in half the time of everyone else and then just sit there and play on my phone for the rest of the time.

Currently sat in the hotel restaurant/bar with my laptop and a pint after enjoying a lovely 2 course meal Cheesy Sitting in a bar on your own having a meal is a weird feeling to me. So I brought my laptop with me so I can steal wifi and pretend like im doing work or some shit like that Cheesy

Several bits of training and education going on around here then! We're all going to end up very clever.

I'm sort of trying to avoid going on a 2 hour training course in Microsoft Outlook. 2hrs!!!!!  We're switching from Windows XP and Groupwise to Windows 7 early next year. Any form of computer training at my place is painful too....the pace is sooo slow, mental health support workers being generally more adept at supporting and enabling people in crisis than finding their way around a computer.

(which actually is fair enough)

Won my auction, will soon be the proud owner of an i7 930, ASUS motherboard and a Corsair H70 for the combined total of £215, which isn't too bad since it would have been around £500 new. With any luck i'll get an overclock to ~4GHz and be sorted for the next 3+ years. Some rough research estimates make it around 30-40% faster in mildly threaded tasks, and ~100% faster in more heavily threaded tasks than my Q6600@3.0GHz. Need to sort out some Triple channel ram, a new case (my SFF is micro-ATX only) and possibly a new PSU.

Annoyingly I seem to have burnt through all my money already and it's three weeks to my next paycheck :/

Yay, Overclockers was having a sale on the RAM I wanted, getting 12GB of Corsair stuff and saved £35

Also bought a second hand Lian Li case for £60, should be mint.

Now to try and find a PSU bargain...

Built up my PC tonight, put everything together, pressed the power button and .... everything works. My RAID array was picked up, booted into my old windows install, updated some drivers and I'm rolling.  I was utterly gobsmacked. Think it's the first time I've ever put one together and not had to take it apart to RMA something, or connect something I forgot.

Loving the Corsair H70 cooler, chip is idling at ~18 degrees atm, and ~40 degrees under full load. Going to run a stress test at stock overnight and then shoot for 4GHz tomorrow.

OH SWEET INTERNET I'VE MISSED YOU.

So, I've had some internet issues recently, which had improved, but BT decided to fit a new junction box outside our house anyway.

On Friday some subcontractors turned up, dug a whole in the pavement, cut our phone line in half, and... buggered off.

I was *somewhat unimpressed*. Also had some choice words for BT on being informed by their helpdesk that they would be able to fix it on Wednesday. Anyway, bloke turned up this afternoon, and as of five minutes ago I appear to have internet again. Smiley

Is it a big green cabinet, next to the old one? If so you'll have access to BT Infinity shortly, which should be a nice speed boost, especially if its right outside your door. Should be good for 40mb down /10mb up, doubling to 80Mb down, 20Mb up next year.

Bit difficult to tell, everything's wrapped up in clear plastic, but I don't think so. We didn't previously have a junction box at all, and the cables aren't run through conduits, they're just loose in the ground, I don't think much has been changed since the suburb was built in the 1960s!

EDIT: Plugging our number in here though says it should be available. And if they went to the hassle of fitting new stuff rather than just fixing the cable would seem to suggest they might be planning that? I guess we'll find out.

Came into work this morning and the Trade Manager was waving about a list left to him by the branch manager with something highlighted in large capitals at the bottom.  Turns out the highlighted bit was "Trevor will die" as I had made a mistake (just one figure, a 1 instead of a 7 counting £20 notes) on one of the 4 separate bits of banking we have to do and it had taken him to nearly 10pm to fix it.  Most people would of given up sooner and passed it on to whoever's job it is to sort out broken banking figures in SAP.  Fortunately he is off Tuesday, I'm off Wednesday and he's in a meeting Thursday.  He should of calmed down by Friday.

A crap start to the day got worse as I lifted up a set of multifold doors to get to some plasterboard with the forklift and was hit by a waterfall where the air con/heater units had leaked onto the doors and formed a pond in the cardboard packaging.  We will probably have to write off around 140 sheets of specialist plasterboard.  Getting rid of damaged plasterboard is practically impossible too.

The rest of the day wasn't bad.  Came home to my 19 month old daughter trying to tell me she was toilet training and she had managed to poo on the rug in the kitchen.

Christmas Shopping tomorrow
