Got my A-Level Results and now I'm going 240miles up north to Lancaster University. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

The following is a drab point of view from an older man's perspective... don't click and be angry after all, it is just an opinion...

Now for the old man bit: You clever young things should now ask yourselves the question "Do I really need university?".  Now wait a second, because I'm not against uni, I went myself. However, you need to ask yourselves if running up an *enormous* debt is the right thing to do just now? Will the course give you what you need for sure? How many qualified people are already there for your chosen profession who can't get into the job market? I know this won't apply to all... but just something to think for some of you

I work in IT, and I see so many grads competing against seasoned, experienced professionals. The only thing they have going for them at the moment is the expectation of a *much* lower wage! I know IT is a wide arena, but in general "IT developer" roles, this is the truth for sure. Anyone wanting to be a standard code monkey should be aware that there are lots of foreign IT developers who are competing against you, and on an even lower wage!

This. I'd be waaaay further along in my career If I'd gone into IT straight out of school. A mate of mine did just this (in fact dropping out after As) and is doing very well for himself now. You end up having to work your way up from the bottom anyway so just get in somewhere and get the Real Life experience that's key. Maybe pick up a Few Cisco and Microsoft qualifications in the evenings at your own pace.
I honestly learnt (and remembered) more useful stuff in a month on my Industrial Placement than I did in years of Uni.

That said Uni is a fantastic laugh, If you're reasonably intelligent (and not going to Oxbridge) you'll have a lot of free time on your hands. It's the last decent holiday you're going to get before working life eats up 40+ hour weeks and you're tired in the evenings and only have a fleeting holiday each year, So join loads of clubs and do all the shit you'll never have time for again.  The student loans aren't a biggie (I barely have any monthly contributions on my wage) so don't worry too much about them. They don't even effect your credit rating for mortgages etc.

Congrats on the results anyway! My sister might be going to Lancaster Uni next year, she applied for her masters there and they offered her a scholarship/grant thing. She has a job she likes up there though so isn't sure she wants to leave it. She's not keen on Lancaster town itself though, much preferred Cardiff where she did her degree.

student loan is absolutely the lightest debt you could ever get. It rises approximately with inflation, has small monthly payments and only when you can afford it, and they write it off if you get too old. Its actually better to hold onto your student debt than pay it off because your money would be better off invested or held in reserve for when you might need to borrow in future and you would end up with far worse borrowing terms than the student debt.

That said uni for a lot of people really is a waste of time/drinking time because university isn't relevant to a lot of careers. It can really delay your career which is where you lose more money, the debt is a fairly minor consideration the lost income you could have been earning is more important.

Depends on your degree; if you do a degree such as English or History, you're basically taking a 3 year sabbatical from life to study something you're interesting, which is great if you don't mind emerging with a large debt, albeit a fairly gentle one as has been said. If you do a more numerical degree it's a different story, as they open up a whole range of careers from finance to research that you wouldn't otherwise have access to, and that's where the fairly lucrative graduate jobs lie. Problems arise when people enter blindly into a humanities degree thinking it'll advance their career and because (more usually) it's what they were good at in school, and expect to compete with the salaries of your actuaries and lawyers who required their degree.

Yeah, most "professional" jobs (Engineering, Sciences, Law, Health) you obviously need one for, IT Careers are the major exception.

That said, my older Sister took Archaeology, which was (predictably) useless at getting her a job, but did serve to tart up her CV with fairly average A level grades enough to get her onto a Vetinary degree course a few years later.
