So I think I had my first experience of commercial daylight robbery today.
Was getting my stuff together for work when I got a phone call from my dad, he was basically really upset cos our cat got hit and killed by a speeding driver today ( RIP Geoff). So I was talking to him as I was getting my shit together, walked out flat door, was just about to walk out the front door when I realised I'd left my keys inside. Jen and the housemate are in Greece, and the flat is on the 1st floor so no way of climbing through a window or something.

So went through the process of calling work to let them know I was gonna be late and called a locksmith. Guy shows up in about 10 minutes, doesn't get any tools out of his car. I take him upstairs to my flat door, he literally pulls out a piece of scrap paper from his pocket, slides it through the door where the lock is and bam, open. He was in the building less than a minute,
cost me £50 -.- wasn't happy

Didn't you think it might be worth getting him to change the lock to something a bit more secure whilst he was there? You'd already paid for the callout and first hours labour.

Would just mean I'd have to pay for the new lock and getting new keys cut. Besides, at the time, all I was thinking about was just getting my keys and getting to work, since I was already running late, and would rather do that shit then rather than now just after I've got back from work (after midnight) when the callout would probs cost even more

Sad to hear about your cat, it's horrible when they get knocked over.

Having worked in the industry for a while  I can tell you £50 wasn't that bad, especially as the guy arrived so fast.  The £50 consists of £5 expenses and £45 knowing what to do.  I'd also advise you to get decent locks.  From Magnet of course

It is truly scary how quick and simple it is to get in most doors.  A decent timber door and frame with a 5 lever mortice lock is probably one of the most secure solutions unless you start spending silly money.

At work we have a rather strange new area manager, he's been on a tour of all his branches and ripped into them for the slightest issues, a branch manager was suspended, rumour has it because there was a bottle of ketchup on the counter.  Our branch was left till last and as one of the oldest bits of it are looking a bit the worse for wear, all we could do was keep it tidy.  The manager made his grand tour and he praised us so much it was embarrassing, a relief in some ways but a bit worrying in others.  He is also sending out more pointless emails than a mail order viagra company.  The branch must of got 20 today.

On another note: I keep some of these (page in german) handy, e.g. at a trustworthy neighbor. Actually, I fashioned mine out of a metal coat hanger. They're of course no use for locked doors, but simply marvellous for "keys inside" situations like yours.

And then some fella breaks into your house in less than 60 seconds! That's a brown trouser moment. But when your in a hurry, your just glad to get on with your day. £50 and arrived in less than 10 minuets. Nice one.
