Today, I tried scraping data off of these buggers:
QIC-80 Backup Tapes.

I even still had the drive:

Three of them still retained their table of contents, but alas, their magnetic force had dwindled to almost nothing, so that I could but mourn the data I lost. Cry

The Story in all of its German un-glory: https://r007.de/QIC-and-Dirty (and a REALLY crappy Google translate version)

Fermentation went well, if overly vigorous for the first day/night, pushing foam through my airlock which in turn forced the water out. Settled down to more normal levels now though i'm stressing about whether any unwanted bacteria got in whilst the airlock wasn't working properly.

Rippy, go ahead with brewing, it can be as easy or complex as you want, you can start with less than 30 quids worth of kit and ingredients.

We still used one of those at Magnet till a couple of weeks ago.  It took about 5 hours to do the end of month procedure/backup.

The area manager and one of the managers in charge of SAP are coming to our branch on Monday.  We spent the whole day compiling a list of serious issues with the software like; it won't let us book out stock ordered in specially for a customer.  It will however refund whatever we want and will refund unlimited amounts of an item just by pressing the validate button.

It is also possible to reserve the entire branch stock and not be able to take if off reserve without head office intervention.

Today I have been a productive little bunny. I had a little lie in. Then I gave the fish tank a good clean. Never a fun job. It would also appear that my fish are cannibals. Or they have the ability to teleport. There are less fish in the tank, yet there are no remains. So either they are disposing of the evidence in fiendish and cunning ways. Or they've got an emergency exit that I haven't spotted yet. I will have to watch them more closely.

I've also indulged in a bit of retail therapy. So I now have a new pair of trainers that are not worn out in the sole, or shredded on the inside lining. I also now own 6 pairs of secret socks. And I also went and got myself a pair of safety boot. And for good measure, when I got home I threw out the old safety shoes and a load of manky socks. Much better.

Two thoughts are currently in my head. One is pondering the problem of wisdom. It turns up at the wrong time, at the end. When I could really use it at the beginning. And the other is, aren't gut instincts annoying.

Something has been nagging away at me for the last few days. I'm not sure what. But eventually everything shakes out. Just like car keys of realization from the jean pockets of life. Along with the general fluff of every day life. I may have mentioned a rather gorgeous 21 year old lass who came knocking at my door. There was a tiny voice in the back of my mind, pointing out the huge truth of no woman in her right mind would ever approach me, without an ulterior motive. But at the time I ignored it due to proximity of a for mentioned gorgeous 21 year old lass. But normal service is defiantly resumed, and the universe continues to turn in it's normal way. Isn't the internet a wonderful thing? Facebook is particularly wondrous. They say a picture can speak a thousand words. And there's lots of pictures on Facebook Smiley Not quite sure why you would take pictures of your place of work. Or business seminars that you attend. But a handy Google search can bring up so many more interesting things.

Sunday tomorrow, and another day off. So finish off the fish tank with a water and filter change. A couple of domestic chores. And hopefully another run of Mythbusters on the discovery channel. In the mean time there is a bottle of cheap red wine, self loathing and internet porn Cheesy

I have an image in my minds eye of Rippy stalking the poor lass now. Tracking her down on Facebook and then scaling walls and chasing her in his new Plimsolls :p

I've not heard anything back on that Job, looks like they gave it to a "friend of a friend" type connection rather than pay for me and the recruiting agency "finders fee". Kinda in two minds, Told the agency my minimum was £20K but I would have probably taken less just to have a steady job again. On the other hand my levels of qualifications and experience should be worth at least £20K a year.
Applied to another couple of jobs, one of them at the local Hospital which would be convenient. Won't find out about it until next month though.

In the meantime I've got a web design project to work on for a local business, should get me a little spending money.

I has a weird rota this week. There's (of many things), 2 things that are associated with me regarding work with my colleagues a) I bring in good tips when I'm working on tables. b) I'm pretty much always working closing shifts (i.e working till the restaurant closes, then cleaning it etc).

So this week is fucking weird, cos I'm not closing once at all D:
Today I did 1-4pm then 7-10pm. tomoro I'm doing just 5-10pm, off  wednesday & thursday, then just a lunch shift friday (12-3) and day shifts saturday and sunday (12-5:30). I cant stress how rare this is, so I'm proper excited. 5 evenings off in a row!

In other news, when I started work today, I was sent out to run a few errands, buying a new light bulb for the fridge and posting a letter to head office. I was given £25 to do so. Bought the light bulb (£4.50) so used the £5 note, so had £20 note left. Somehow on the way to the post office, lost the £20 note, so had to pay for the postage myself, and also give work back the change (i.e. give work £20). Was a bit pissed off.
On the plus side, I was working the mid shift on my own for 1 and 1/2 hours and made £25 in tips alone. When you think that actually works out at like £21.56 p/h inc. wage, not too shabby.

just spent most of last night and the entire morning playing around with servers. Feel like such a nerd but it's all useful interview fodder.

If anyone's interested, I put ESXi on my Microserver running from a USB stick, set up a Solaris VM running ZFS RAIDZ over four 2TB drives, then brought up a Windows Server 2008 VM as a Domain Controller, DNS and DHCP server, on both ipv4 and ipv6 and shifted those functions from my router.

Later I'll back up most of my primary windows 2003 fileserver to my new Solaris file server, convert the 2003 install to a VM, then put ESXi on that box to run my old 2003 install, plus a couple of new 2008 installs (one for clustering the AD, DNS, DHCP functions, one for migrating my 2003 install over ). I've got a nice 30GB SSD to put in as the "OS drive" too.

Beer update: Took a hydro sample, it's now at ~1.006 which should mean a final Alcohol Volume of around 3.5%. Tasted it and it's surprisingly drinkable despite being flat and less than a week old. I've been served worse in pubs. Nice to know it can only get better from here.

It aught to clear up considerably, over the next month, especially once i add some Gelatine, but was actually clearer than it looks.

In brief, I HATE SEAGULLS!  Angry

Now I know I should be rational. I know I should be open minded. But some how what I really want is a paint ball gun.

One of the car parks in Gloucester city center has a seagull that thinks the entire roof is it's territory. So going back the car the sodding sky-rat took off, went for a low swoop for my head and commenced an effluent bombing run. Little feathery bastard! Not content doing this once it went for repeated strafing runs. This made getting into the car a bit difficult. Thankfully some other sucker was attempting to get into their car. And the shit filled git went off to harass her. I moved the car off and found some cover. I then went and had a chat with the car park attendant. It's safe to say he wasn't interested. Well I suppose it's something entertaining for him to watch. Back home. Change shirt. Change trousers. Clean work boots. Clean car seat. Ring pest control. No one in, but please leave a message. Grrrr!

If it wasn't bad for my soul & karma, I'd go back up East Gate Street car park with some bread and alkazelser   Angry

I have lived in various seaside towns since the early 90s.

Seagulls are the lowest, most annoying form of life anywhere on this planet.

It's even illegal to kill them although the bread and Alkaseltser idea sounds a good one.
