Don't tell BT, but I moved my master socket today, because the internal wiring in my house is so rubbish and picks up a lot of electrical noise. It's now sat right next to where the cable enters the house. Still need to get a proper backbox and fix it to the wall, it's just dangling atm and asking for the cats to mess it up.

Next step is finding out which of my routers has the best modem (ideally I'd get a Billion 7800N, with the new broadcom chipset but they cost a fortune) and then getting my line profile reset.
Previously I was forced on to a fixed 2Mb profile with Interleaving, I'm hoping to move to a 4Mb profile with Fastpath.

Cheesy

Heh, ordered a backbox this morning - as long as I do a clean job fixing it to the wall I can't see them even noticing if we ever have them out again.
Whilst I was browsing eBay i went spend happy, picked up a solder station with handy crocodile clips and a magnifying glass for £7 - been so many times over the years on fiddly solder jobs where I wished I had one.

Same for a proper wire stripping tool (£2.30), I had one but it broke and I've been missing it for about 5 years now.

Also ordered a wireless 360 pad for PC, £20. Be good to get back into driving and flight games.

As for wire stripping tools, these are the ones we use at work and they are without a doubt the best most awesome stripping tool I've ever seen or used:

And yeah - having a good set of soldering tools is very useful!

Though in all seriousness that does look quite shiny Deadly.

Also ordered a wireless 360 pad for PC, £20. Be good to get back into driving and flight games.

Just to check, you know you need one of these, yeah?

wireless pads for windows are bundled with those. At the same time I was reading recently that the receiver can damage your usb controller... I have a wireless receiver and usb issues. Might be safer to get a wired one

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_accessories#Wireless_Gaming_Receiver

Quote
Also an issue that has arisen from this product is the amount of power in which the receiver draws. There have been many reports[citation needed] that the receiver will work for days, weeks, or couple of months then fail to "receive" the signal from the Xbox 360 controller. This issue has been solved in a number of ways by end users depending on where the damage from the excess power has manifested itself—in some cases simply purchasing a powered hub (which typically can provide a higher current than a PC port) will fix the issues while in others it may be necessary to work around a blown internal fuse.

Never had any problems with my wireless 360 pad, for what it's worth. Setting it up to start with can be a pain the arse, but since then it's been no issue.

i've not had problems with the pad itself but something has been fucking my usb controllers up, it was either an overclock setting or the 360 receiver. Either way the wireless pad has a lot of downsides, potential usb damage, extra cost for the receiver, extra cost for the play and charge kit because it is worthless without one, extra weight, wired anyway when charging. For someone just buying a pad I'd recommend just save yourself some money and hassle and get a wired one

Spent this afternoon learning about Harold Forster, who is my first cousin three times removed. Saw various papers relating to his military career, letters home and his medals. Some really interesting stuff, especially about trench life in the letters to his wife.

Today I did what I do every day, fight with SAP to drag invoices kicking and screaming from it's bloated and corrupt software.  The other day we tried to refund a builder £3000 (a canceled kitchen order) and somehow SAP took £6000 out his account.  The guy took it surprisingly well, he didn't kill anyone or smash up the place even after it took nearly a week to get the money back to him.  It doesn't help that all but one of our chip and pin machines have broken, we are unable to take account payments on a weekend and money regularly disappears off the system despite printing out invoices.  Its stock management software is awful and it looks like they too several wildly incompatible open source programs, got them sort of working together in IE6 and hired News of the World journalists to sell it.

I must be winning though I've done 66% of my target for the month already.
