As some of you may know my microphone is shoddy. But as some of you may remember from our first borderlands session and more recently yesterday in a game of TF2 (Sorry Junta, Skinned, that American guy who thought he was hilarious and everyone else who I don't remember) all you can hear through my mic is an unbearable amount of feedback.I've had a play around with it's setting and still can't get anything but feedback when I test it. Does anyone have any ideas what could suddenly have gone wrong or know any software that can stop it?

Do I need a new mic?

current mic, purchased from Game probably about... 7 years ago

It might be just a normal feedback loop; IIRC you're using a desktop mic and desktop speakers right? Remembering back to our college days, if the sound going into the mic is louder then the sound coming out of the speakers, you get feedback, or something like that. Try using headphones instead of speakers and see if that makes any difference. Or better yet, turn you ingame volume/mic input volume down and see if that helps.

Or just get a headset with a mic built in. Search the forums for recomendations, theres at least 2 threads on the topic I belive.

Add this to your autoexec.cfg:-

Pressing microphone button to speak, will lowere your game volume by half while your talking, when you let go of voice it will return to full volume. (change 0.5 to 0 to completely mute game while you speak)

The bogey incident rings a bell but my memory needs refreshing with an anecdote. Do remember hitting Jason in the head with a drumstick though, that was lolz.

OH YEAH! LOLZ! The flicking bogey was accidental, but the people next to us shouldn't of been so close.

I dunno what they would of been more scared of, the bogey or seeing you climbing over me in the passenger seat to take a photo on your phone.

Sounded a bit like your input source wasn't what you thought it was (definitely didn't sound like regular feedback to me). Can you check what you see in the Steam settings, it can go a bit wonky sometimes.

If its a soundblaster, 'default recording device' could be set to 'what you hear' in windows itself (done this myself before lol)

Ah yes claws was there too.

Just tried was hizfag suggested and I don't get feedback with the headphones in. Although I'm glad to have a bit of a solution, if possible would like to find a fix that doesn't require headphones as it does leave me vulnerable to my completely trustworthy housemates who aren't weird or evil at all.

Would it help if I install an old sound card I've got kicking around when I go back home? (end o march) as am currently using my Mobo's onboard one.

You might have an option in the advanced options of your soundcard (if it's a realtek onboard chip it should be there if you open the realtek properties (icon next to your clock)), called "Noise Cancellation" or "Loopback cancellation". What it does is removing whatever the soundcard is currently sending through speakers from the input signal while you are saying anything into the mic, ideally only leaving your voice as the input signal.

The only reason I suggested that is that a few times when we've been playing Borderlambs I've heard myself speaking when you've been transmitting. I'm pretty sure if you want to keep using speakers then turn your mic gain down so that it doesn't pic up the sound coming out of your speakers, or somehow attach the mic to your face so you don't have to have the gain up as high but we can still hear your lovely voice.

Good shout Power! I found something called Noise Suppression and Acoustic Echo Cancellation and the combination of the two has help completely irradiate said noise.
