As you probably know, because of my constant whining, I have ping trouble on our server, it ranges from 150 to 200. So, as Junta suggested, I ran a tracert:

Tracing route to 193.93.45.30 over a maximum of 30 hops

  1    47 ms    99 ms    99 ms  dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]
  2    39 ms    39 ms    38 ms  zagreb5.amis.net [194.146.109.213]
  3    40 ms    38 ms    38 ms  zagreb2-ge-0-0-0-1.amis.net [194.146.109.1]
  4    42 ms    42 ms    41 ms  maribor3-ge-2-8.amis.net [212.18.41.165]
  5    51 ms   220 ms   238 ms  vienna1-te-2-2.amis.net [212.18.39.214]
  6   134 ms   134 ms   134 ms  80.120.176.181
  7   136 ms   136 ms   136 ms  AUX10-WARSBC06.highway.telekom.at [195.3.70.69]

  8   135 ms   133 ms   133 ms  IIX11-AUX10.highway.telekom.at [195.3.70.106]
  9   151 ms   150 ms   151 ms  linx1.rackage.com [195.66.225.8]
 10   153 ms   152 ms   153 ms  193.93.45.30

Trace complete.

Thoughts?
P.S. Apps running in the background (the ones I'm aware of): Steam (duh), ZoneAlarm, avast! Antivirus, MSN (sometimes)

Your router/local lan is the problem.
Bad cable/WLAN connection?

Hmm. Shows that your network connection gets worse quickly (hop 5/6 suddenly rockets up)

I know I'm in a different country, here is mine by comparison:

 1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.0.1
 2    28 ms    28 ms    30 ms  broadband.bt.net [217.47.23.145]
 3    30 ms    28 ms    29 ms  217.47.23.30
 4    30 ms    29 ms    29 ms  217.47.200.10
 5    29 ms    31 ms    42 ms  217.41.170.21
 6    29 ms    29 ms    29 ms  217.41.170.65
 7    30 ms    30 ms    30 ms  217.41.170.138

11    30 ms    33 ms    30 ms  core2-te0-5-0-0.ukcore.bt.net [194.74.65.34]
12    29 ms    29 ms    30 ms  core2-pos9-1.telehouse.ukcore.bt.net [194.74.65.18]
13    29 ms    29 ms    30 ms  194.74.65.58
14    33 ms    34 ms    35 ms  te5-3.telehouse-east2.core.enta.net [87.127.236.7]
15    34 ms    34 ms    33 ms  te4-4.telehouse-east.core.enta.net [87.127.236.]
16    36 ms    65 ms    30 ms  te2-3.redbus-sov3.core.enta.net [87.127.236.29]
17    32 ms    29 ms    29 ms  84-45-244-174.static.enta.net [84.45.244.174]
18    34 ms    35 ms    34 ms  193.93.45.30

Your router/local lan is the problem.
Bad cable/WLAN connection?
Can I just ask what makes you think that Cruel mate? The hops get worse quickly along the tracert rather than at the start and consistently bad? Just asking Wink

Torgue... are many UK TF2 servers the same for you? Ping issues I mean?

1    47 ms    99 ms    99 ms  dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]

47ms to your local router is NOT acceptable.
(Hmm, unless that's not his router, but the one of his provider. Are there providers in Torgue-land who don't give you a public IP?
Though the name doesn't suggest it to be from the provider.)

Edit: Thinking about it, 47-99ms to your local provider isn't really acceptable either.

Not much of an idea for now, but if I had to place a bet, I'd say the router is overloaded (P2P by a roommate?). Then all the ping values after that hop are pretty much just a game of dice. (That would also explain the huge fluctuation of the 5th hop.)

I'm sharing a wireless network with my cousin for over a year, but the troubles started in December '09. Also, the ping varies from 85-160 on UK servers.

Are you connected wirelessly to the router or via cable? That 47 is horrendous. Can you ping just your router and see if it's reproducible? Also wondering if you have wireless channel collisions - try a different channel in the router settings.

That looks fine there to your router. Unfortunately it does mean the problem is with your ISP and not locally - so I'd get in touch with them.

But is your ping to the server ok now too, or is this an intermittent problem?
