Really, first priority should be what games you want to play. If you like to play shooters, you'll probably dislike ANY console out there right now.
Also it depends on what you want from a graphical point of view. If you want to play at high resolution, max graphics and 60 fps you'll get poor very fast with a PC.
(Btw. do console games aim for 30+fps or 60+fps?)

Console games are meant to run at 60fps, the refresh rate of TVs.

I still like PCs, and as people have said, you need one anyway. Though I question how much longer you'll need to keep upgrading it (outside of games).

What exactly are they going to put into the OS that will need a fast quad core? Almost nothing, I imagine. And then of course a basic PC that can do regular things (surf the net, write documents, watch movies) will become incredibly cheap, but a gaming PC will still be expensive and non portable.

We've already seen a move towards this sort of bottom line computing with Netbooks and the like. (Can't imagine using one as my main computer MYSELF, but me and you, reading this, are incredibly tiny subsets of the gamer population as a large)

I don't really want to abandon PCs, but between shitty ports, lack of games, lack of dedicated servers, shitty DRM and yeah, the eventual pointlessness of having a top line PC when a cheap one will do everything except ram 60 jillion polygons into your brain.

Surprisingly, I'm a bit of a pessimist.

I don't think it has DRM is a fair downside for the PC. Xbox and PS3 have DRM to the point your entire system gets banned from their network should you modify it in any way. PC gaming is shittier than it was Brahms sure, but its still the top of the shit pile

I thought they only ran at ~24fps

Personally I'd say consoles are cheaper overall, but PC gaming is better value because you have much greater flexibility and the games are usually cheaper (especially with things like the Steam weekend sales).

It will eventually come to this, along with all other media streaming, but until BT sort out the comms you have no chance....

Debateable. For FPS games, RTS and MMORPGS, yes.

Everything else? Not sure I'd agree, just because a lot of it never gets released on PC, or when it is released, it's a piece of crap.

Well, perhaps we are looking at it from the wrong side.

Console games are easier to develop. Therefor they can be made cheaper or more spectacular for the same amount of money. Piracy is far less an issue, so revenues are better. Support should be easier to handle (if necessary at all).

It has been pointed out already that a console could be expanded rather easily to do some basic functions like surfing. It's not a big step to add a few more functions like email and basic office programs. Add a few tools like image editing etc and for a lot of people you have replaced the computer.
And that replacement would be much more reliant and less prone to trouble than any computer today.

With Alan Wake now an x360 exclusive, and the respective online content delivery systems proving very popular for indie games, I wonder how much longer we'll be gaming on PCs.

But what I want to know, is which do you think is cheaper?

What a apples and oranges question...apart from with a curve ball price question (which just as much sense!).

I had a replacement analogous comparison question but frankly, there's no need (and it wasn't very good, comparing Apples to Pineapples in that sentence structure...urg, what was I thinking?).

We'll be gaming on PC's always. Consoles are becoming PC like, PC's will never go away since they're ubiquitous, comfortable to use, have a keyboard and mouse, and since they're there to do other things they might as well have games on them too.

The "cost" is divided up more fairly between, you know, all the other non-game things you do. I don't know about you, but I'd hate to browse the net on my Wii all the time (and the others don't even have browsers). The main barrier is confort and usability (ie; table, proper chair, distance to monitor and that TV screens have shit resolution and massive pixels).

Do you include the cost of your non-gaming PC/Netbook/Mac/laptop into your console equation? Or perhaps even the cost of your TV? (no doubt more expensive then a monitor...) etc. etc. - it's really a very big apples versus oranges thing, they're both fruit...but still....

Oooooh, wait, you mean big 3d FPS games? (reading in a bit here...) I'm sure there'll be always a few around for the PC. I mean, even Mac's get ports...and even then, the amount of actual videogames on the PC far outweighs any console when you include the internet. Many genre types can only be effectively done on the PC (RTS being the main one), etc. etc.
