With Alan Wake now an x360 exclusive, and the respective online content delivery systems proving very popular for indie games, I wonder how much longer we'll be gaming on PCs.

But what I want to know, is which do you think is cheaper?

Depends on how many games you buy. A lot of games -> PC is much cheaper. Few games -> Console gaming is for you. This is from a standpoint including the cost of hardware btw.

Also: how much longer we will be playing on PCs -  as long as there is FPS. Alan Wake rapidly went from a very promising game 4 years ago, to a run of the mill 3rd person "shooter" they presented last year. The only reason they "dropped" the PC version, is because they have to finally release it and because Microsoft is, ironically, the worst enemy of PC gaming and being the publisher would do whatever it has to do, to maximize the appeal of the X360.

You can also do a lot of things on your PC you can't do on a console, anyway there will always be PC games as long as they are used in the workplace with an internet connection.

I can't see people sneaking consoles into work...... well actually I can and umm... I have done so on occasion, but not recently and only on night shifts and it wasn't your average job.

Edit: To answer the original question, you can spend far more on the PC but if you budget carefully you could probably spend around the same.  The thing is even if you have a console most people have a PC as well.

I'd subtract some of my hardware cost though, if i wasn't gaming on my pc i'd still be getting a decently fast machine for media and work use. My simulation benefits from a faster machine and using the ide is easier too when its not choking on its own bloat. There is a difference in what i'd spend but i'd still spend say 66% of what I spent on my newest gaming rig (and I made my last one, last 5 years)

Good PC is more expensive but games are cheaper. So depends.

i'll be candid, its just much easier to pirate on the PC which is the reason i would continue to use it and the reason i assume that the format will ultimately fail

I prefer the PC to the console because I can fap at will in front of the PC whereas I can't fap in front of the console because it's in the living room and my mum's there having a cup of tea

 Load of games such as MMO's and FPS's will be never be as good on consoles as they are on PC's, simply due to the controllers.

 The minute they start introducing keyboards + mice as standard gaming controllers for consoles, they've basically just turned the thing into a gaming PC - what with all the extra shit these things do these days.

Tough one. With the new console cycle being spoken about as being 10 years, £300 is nothing for hardware, although the games prices are creaping higher and higher.

PC is a pretty heafty outlay and needs upgrades every 5 years or so plus expensive periferals (screens, keyboards, mice) but the games are cheaper and the online stuff is better and you can use them for more then gaming (i.e. wanking).

PC gaming all day for me, just because I can't use duel analogue sticks anymore .

putting some figures into mine i'd still spend £800 on a new non gaming build, so I either spend £400 buffing it up to a sexy pc build or on a console, but my work needs still benefit from that extra £400 and media is handled better than on a console. And for similar prices a locked system is uber fail. Certainly for me I am saving 50% per game purchase because the hardware cost balances out. N64 was the last console I was seriously into, I had a cube but it was pitiful really. And I have a Wii but thats just for group spastication. Although a bunch of Wii games are down to £10-£20 on amazon so I might pick some more singleplayer stuff up

Bear in mind a console requires a decent TV in the same way gaming requires a decent PC. Again, it'll be used for things other than gaming, but it's still part of the investment.

I think sites like SavyGamer and its like are extremely good for PC Gaming- realising that you can get good games for small amounts is essential if pirating is going to be stopped (better that someone buys your game for half price than for no price at all).
