Started playing the campaign of this the other night, seems pretty much just like any generic RTS so far with a the cutscenes of ME/ME2 thrown in or something Cheesy

Anyway - my copy came with 2 free-passes for someone to try the game if anyone wants one?

I've got 2 of the buggers to. Why oh why didn't they release a normal demo, sigh! Presumably Deadly will send you one power. I can send out some more.

Fisted: I'm not sure I will enjoy learning the multiplayer. I've played the campaign which required next to no hotkeying, and have fought some vs. AI games, but am kind of dreading fighting 1v1's or proper versus human games.

Not because I can't become competent, but because I fear I will simply waste my time and not actually enjoy it. It's rather worrying!

A large amount of improvement in the RTS genre is lost on this game; for shame really, but hopefully mods will be good fun once I can find any worth playing.

there's loads of custom maps and multiplayer is pretty good. If you don't want to get good, then don't and stay in the lower leagues. Learn some rush/proxxy builds or something and have a laugh.

Saying that. I've really enjoyed the learning curve in this game. Yes it's hard, but there's plenty of help for noobs like us.

I trust you played the campaign on easy/medium? It requires a LOT of hotkeys.

The challange mode game you mentioned a while back really helps. The one where you have to defend against rushes ect.. basically, if you can defend that, you can macro up and just beat them down with your bigger economy and therefore, larger army. Those rushes are 99% of the time, all in, and it's impossible to catch up once you've started as you'll be behind in workers really early which has a massive effect later on in the game.

Don't be scared, man up and do your placement matches. Just get them out of the way. I was bricking myself, but it's just a game after all and I realised what a cock I was being. You payed a LOT of money for this game, at least give it a go.

PS. If you wanna do some 2v2 or praccy matches, let me know, I'm always good for a game of sc2 Smiley

On the custom map front, I'd like to point out a few of them. They're essentially custom game modes or mini games.

Nexus wars is pretty fun. You get 1 worker and he has to put up buildings. Those buildings produce your army 1 at a time and they automatically run down a massive lane to a guy who's doing the same thing. You get 2 minerals per kill and a tick of money every 20 seconds based on how many buildings and what buildings you've made. It's actually pretty helpful for the lower league players as it'll show you what units are good at what ect... Give it a go

the Special Forces maps are pretty cool too. You start with 1 army guy (have more hp/attack than normal untis) and you have to kill a load of zerg to build him up, get more friends for him and then finally clear the map of any remaining zerg. Think they're called night special forces and urban special forces.

There's also a LOAD of TD maps. Some comepetitive and others co-op. Search the popular map section in multiplayer.

Yeah just going to re-iterate what Chaos was saying. Played through the campaign first time on Normal, pretty much 1 shotting everything with all bonus objectives. Playing through it on Brutal now, there is a real step-up in difficulty, to the point where you need to be micro-ing your units at the same time as developing your base (The great Train Robbery for example).

But the fun in multi-player comes from the challenge tbh.

Nah, Hard for me, I just didn't need many hotkeys (apart from "attack move"). Not tried Brutal though, but might vaguely retry it. Had to retry a few maps though because simply the opening of the game had you essentially against an unknowable force so bugger knows where to place defences; typical kind of original SC affair really (Train Robbery certainly a big culprit). Oh how I long for Company of Hero briefings!

Still doing some co-op versus AI's...we'll see if I move into competitive play. Saw a beatdown of an enemy hard AI with a protoss tower attack, ouch...

It's also not that the learning curve isn't there, and it is hard to learn, just it is really pretty tedious to learn build orders for such a limited amount of actions. Hmm...certainly micro heavy tactical combat more then strategic planning in any case.

There's plenty of strategy going on. The hard part of the strats is actually implementing them. For example, as protoss, I want void rays. But to get them I need a gateway, then a cybernetics core, then a stargate. If I want mass void rays, I'll need an expo or 2 to sustain more than 1 stargate. and you can't really have just void rays (as awsome as they are) so you need some stargate/robo units too, which means more income is needed.

The biggest issue there is getting your expos. You can't really just go and drop one without "earning" it. You have to make sure that you can defend it propperly which means containing the enemy in his base by pushing your army forward.

I do get what you mean about build orders though. It's pretty boring stuff, but once you start to learn a few, they come a lot more natural and you can modify them to what you want to do in the game.

There's also loads of fun to be had in harassment. I've had so much fun mentally fking with a guy with my mutalisks. bounce them around their base to kill workers, supply block them, unpower their buildings. All that gives you an advantage in one way or another.

It's not boring. There's boring elements.

My uni teacher told me that if something is simple, it has to be perfect. Any blemish will stand out. What I'm saying is, that yes, the multiplayer is fairly simple. But the beauty is in the small decisions.
