Over the last couple of months ive saved enough for my i7 system, I also put away a little bit for a pram and the nursery furniture that I need.
Unfortunatley the price of a pram, nursery furniture and other baby stuff is a little bit more than thought it would be, about the the price of an i7 system more

So I need a cheap upgrade to keep me going for the next 8-9months while the missus' isn't working and im skint.

I can spare about ~£300, Both my CPU and GPU need a upgrade which is why I was saving up, but I can't afford both so which is the priority? I was just thinking of throwing in a 5770 but would the cpu hold it back?

Current spec;

E2200 @ 3.33Ghz
8800GT 512MB
4gb DDR2 800
Gigabyte P35-DS3L

My monitor is 1920x1080, but I currently play at ~1600x900 to keep things smoother.

Gaming is the most stressful thing the PC does, although I have bought a HD camcorder too so I might want to edit a few bits if the PC is upto it. (another thing in my grand i7 pc scheme )

I don't mind overclocking though I wouldn't want to overvolt stuff.

Tbh it doesn't look too bad of a system, it's probably the resolution that strains your system a bit. I'd say CPU would probably be a better option and you can definitely get something for CPU under 300 GBP. Your graphics card should actually be able to pull of the desired resolution just fine. I don't know much about your current CPU, but from the model number it doesn't seem to be very shiny. Dual core with 1MB cache?

Going to have to disagree here, that CPU at 3.33 should be fine for another year. Very few games make good use of a quad at this point and so a fast dual core is fine. Throw a Radeon 5850 (£230) in there and you'll be laughing at 1920x1200 high details in anything.
The leftover cash might even be enough to pick up a second hand Q6600 that you could OC to 3GHz+ if you want, The system will last ya even longer then ... but as I said make the GPU your priority.

Yup...agree pretty much - I suppose if you want to make it seem faster...you could get an SSD as well?

Makes your PC boot up in a flash and you can probably get one for ~£130 and then spend the rest on a shiny new gfx card.

Edit: Ah...actually...looks like they have gone up in price...the one I bought was £130 and is now £180...ouch.

Edit Again: And yeah...if you can pick up a Q6600 or a Q9400/9550 with the money left over that'd be a pretty hefty upgrade.

Hmm, actually I'm running a 8800GT as well and have no problems with 1920. FPS are usually fine.

Usually you'll want more than 512MB for gaming at 1920, especially if there's any AA. Average frame rates usually aren't hit too hard, but you see lower minimums when it's forced to swap out textures leading to more of a stuttering effect. Might only happen one every few minutes, but it's annoying.

I kept my old system going for 5 years just upgrading graphics and memory. Until a month ago I was running a P4 3.4 GHz, 4 Gb of Ram and a 4850 1024 MB. I'd say get a 5850. I got mine for 200 pounds with a free copy of DIRT2.

My PC is a bit like Triggers broom. I still think of it as basically the same as when I started it in 2006.

I agree, GFX card, it made the most difference when I upgraded my PC previously (with a dual core as you have).
