I find most game music quite boring, so in settings I tend to mute the music and pipe in some of my own tunes instead. Now it might be because I'm slightly OCD but I always aim to make the music fit to what I'm playing. For example, In Silico by Pendulum was perfect when I was rinsing Mass Effect. And now that Dragon Age has arrived I think I'm gonna bust out some Led Zeppelin, namely their "obsessed with lotr" stuff.
Kyuss was awesome for any fighting games, FF9 will always remind me of the Doors (and vice versa) and Bad Religion was always on when I was playing DoW (playing chaos might of had something to do with that)
You doodz ever make your own soundtracks?

Depends on the type of game, dialogue heavy games I usually don't listen to anything, but games I've played before or that don't really have much talking (Borderlambs and FleshTorchlight spring to mind) I usually just have iTunes on random.
The Kyuss song Whitewater will always remind me of playing Pro Evo 4 in my friend Alex's mums house stoned off our tits though.
edit - Actually, tell a lie, I did listen to Sonic Youth a hell of a lot whilst I was playing FFX and I think the Doors Strange Days and everything by the Flamming Lips whilst playing FFXII.

In GTA I throw my usual music in there. In multiplayer I disable music, hearing stuff can save your life!

Fair enough with multiplayer, though I was in a random TF2 pub once with someone mic-spamming 'Amazing Horse' and I didn't even mind. Found it empowering.

i only found playing some fast paced music in BF2 helped, especially when flying around in a jet. other than that it can become a distraction especially in an FPS

I still think your idea of the Sir Digby Chicken-Ceaser song every time you get ubered is a good shout.

In your regular sinlge player game I want to experience the game as pure as possible. Music would distract me. On multiplayer I basically agree with Cruel, sound carries a lot of essential information which could get lost with music.
However, I played a few games while running parts of the Martix score in the background, and it was a very intense experience.
Which brings me to a question: Has anybody ever found a way to play music from within the game (play command) while on a server? If you start your own server it works fine, but online didn't work.

I don't quite get what you mean there. if you want to broadcast the sound to everyone you could use HLSS but we ban people pretty quickly for using that

I always listen to music when I play TF2. Most of the time hardcore like Terror or death before dishonor.... TF2 isn't that sneaky that you have to hear everything.
In Sp's I don't listen to music.

I just run music through my speakers and game sounds through my headset - they're sound cancelling so you can just put both earphones on if you're using sound.

I still play to dragonforce now and then..
Don't mistake that for me liking that band. They just make fast music for me to play games with... Most Hollywood music scores sound stupid out of their element <-- Case in point
