Okay, basically I don't notice any difference in either Sandman or FaN, though I never played much with them. Okay, sandman only stuns on maximum distance (so basically never), but the effect it has now goes in the same direction - you can't fight back and you're in 3rd person. The FaN is pretty much the same for me, probably because I usually used it when close enough to do enough damage anyway. Can't seem to get the FaN jump right and don't know if want...

Another bad thing that happened with the scout update is the introduction of 3rd person. Completely breaks immersion and is a cheap way to "nerf" something. Oh look you suddenly switched to another perspective, for no other reason than to see what great particle effects we made for the Bonk/Sandman. How's that for an FPS? Same for humiliation. Hey guys! We wasted our time on this special animations during the humiliation round and we want you to see them! Bah.

I think TF2 is the first valve game designed at casual pubbing.

(and don't say CS, because CS originally wasn't a Valve game)

 Bit of a generalisation, I was stressed at work. I just always had the impression even from the initial releases of the game that valve seemed to specifically be creating this as an especially 'casual friendly' game.

Either the update isn't applied to WDG1 or the update is a big phat fail. I lost my rage at a health cabinet and dead ringer doesn't act different at all.

Power, I really don't have that much of an issue with the 3rd person thing. The bonk thing was just meh, cos it's fucking useless way, but I really like the humilation animations. Tis a bit of fun. And there is nothing funnier than crouch-our jumping around infront of ppl with hit-scan weapons, cos you suddenly crouch into a tiny ball that's quite hard to hit ^^

I get what you're saying Cheez, but I'm sorry, everytime I use the fan, I feel cheap. I like to earn my kill, I wanna feel primarily I've outplayed my enemy. But whenever I get annoyed in a comp match, I use the FaN to get revenge Tongue
Problem with it is it is fine for screwing scouts and occasionally medics. But against sollys (decent ones at least) it can just fuck 'em up a bit...which is a good thing I suppose, but who knows post-nerf

If your client is updated, you cannot connect to servers that are not patched to the same level.

As clients typically update as you try to launch the game, then I'd say the server is updated....

...unless you were on a different server and didnt realise Cheesy

Unfortunately this is not always true. It depends on what was changed and if the internal build number was changed during an update. There were a couple of updates already where you could play on a server that was not updated yet, with several things missing accordingly.

The inital update was actually released with a game breaking bug again, making it impossible to play for a big group of people, with a debugger windows coming up when most of the game keys were pressed. There was a small silent update a short time later, that fixed it. Again, how that one slipped through QA if there is any, I dunno.

Anyway, the only reason I'm asking is because I didn't feel any changes in the scout department and Cruel didn't see a difference in the Spy department apparently. Might be, because I don't play with the changed items usually or that the changes weren't as big as I thought. Or our server didn't have the update...

The scout changes are turned on/off by a cvar I think, so unless it's turned on there won't be any difference. Not sure what the default setting will be but I'd hazard a guess that it'd be off as it is mainly for the comp dudes.

I thought only shotgun spread is a cvar? The FaN and Sandman changes are supposed to be always on, at least that's how I read it?

Yeah, thats what I was talking about, didn't make that clear! I guess the other changes are there but either bugged or so slight that you wouldn't notice the difference....Typical Valve QA right there.

Also, whats the deal with the random scatter cvar, are we going to trial it for a bit? Obviously if it is too OP then its a pretty easy thing to change back but I'd love to see what difference it makes.

edit - I know a lot of people think that on the comp side of things it will make the scout massivly op (which I kind of agree with), I'd just be interested to see the effect in pub games more then anything else.

I think the scout is strong enough as he is, but then again, I HATE scouts, so I'm not really a valid speaker on that topic.

Btw. TF2 just got another small update:


  • Fixed grounded players receiving falling damage from Force-A-Nature shots directly above them
  • Fixed the Force-A-Nature firing fewer pellets when tf_use_fixed_weaponspreads was 1
  • Updated the achievement icon for the "May I Cut In?" Spy achievement to match the achievement description
