Saw it today, it was bloody brilliant and unusually in this sort of film it was English Victorian England, not some hollywood producer who's never been to Englands version of it, probably Guy Richie's best ever film.
The main plot could of been a bit less dumbed down but this is one film I want to see the sequel too, I got the impression this was just a warm up.

I got the impression from the trailers this has nothing to do with actual Sherlock Holmes. Am I wrong?

I've read the books (admittedly a loooong time ago) and this is not a really bad thing, even Conan Doyle got very bored of him. They have taken the essence of Sherlock Homes and made a decent action hero of the opium smoking, anal retentive eccentric.

It's supposed to be quite different in tone from the original movies, but it's still Conan Doyle's detective character in the end. I'm possibly seeing it tomorrow, so I'll have a slightly more informed opinion then.

Saw it on New Year's Day. It's an extremely silly film, but good fun to watch.

I considered watching it but I think I'd prefer mystery over explosions.

its been a long time since i read the books but i'm pretty sure holmes was not an action hero, can't he just say based on Holmes and give him a different name, its clearly not the same character.
