Will be getting a new mp3 player/ipod soon and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations? Price isn't much of a problem as long as it's not outrageously expensive. Don't really care about the software that comes with it either as I'll be using mediamonkey to sync my music anyway.

The main thing I would want, if it's possible, is a player that has something similar to the 'queue' feature on winamp. For anyone unfamiliar with winamp, the 'queue' feature lets you decide which song will play next before the current one has finished and without changing the order of the playlist. I don't think I explained it very well but hopefully someone will know what I mean.
Anyone got any ideas?

I got a Sony NWZA829B, really good sound quality, but it won't play FLAC natively.

I can vouch for the iRiver models... you don't need iTunes to put the damn music on and the iRiver devices support drag and drop when connected to a PC (they also double up as removable drives).

I have an older MP3 iRiver model from 2004.. 20gb and its great, still going strong. Will have to get a newer lighter weight model soon though

Personally I would go with Zarf, but that's because I have an irrational hatred of anything with a lower case i in front of it.

It all comes down to what are you really after: The Sansa Clip+ is a fantastic basic player - great sound quality (better than ipods), fantastic price for the capacity ... but if you're after video features, or wifi / web browsing you need to start looking at more expensive players.

If you want the absolute best sound quality, and things like flac support and optical out, the Cowon players are good.

Just get an iPod Touch. I also used to hate everything Apple, but my Touch is the best thing I bought last year. It's so much more than just an MP3 palyer. It's so easy to use that even my mum (who's 60 next year) bought one a few weeks ago. Now she's always sending me messages through the Yahoo Messenger app.

Yes, iTunes is awful (it got better with v9 but I still don't really understand how to use it), but once your music is on the iPod you rarely have to connect it to a computer for anything. FLAC support would be nice (I rip all my CDs to FLAC for streaming to my Squeezeboxes), but it would eat into the disk space of a portable player very quickly, and would you really notice the difference through cheap-ish headphones?

I used to have a Creative Zen Vision:M, until it got stolen. At the time it was superior in many ways to equivalent iPods, but it got annoying that everything available is aimed at iPods. Sometimes it is just better to go with the crowd.

Use iTunes to rip to 'apple flawless'..... yes it not FLAC but will you really tell the difference?  Also you squeeze box will play apple flawless fine......

Just make sure your itouch has enough space for lossless compressed files though

iPhone / iPod touch have great extra features, but they are expensive, bulkier than dedicated mp3 players, have worse battery life and use noticeably worse audio circuitry, which is a slap in the face at their prices.

it does have poor audio I'll give you that..
But I only ever noticed that through the cheapo headphones that apple supplied with it.. Never used hands free in my life as I dont wanna look like a BMW Douchebag so I use a pair of BeyerDynamic DT770s and it sounds awsome

As chaos sayus the standard headphones are naff but with a decent set, unless you are an audiophile you won't tell the difference in sound quality to any other mp3 player

Since I got an iPhone cheap from a friend I use that for listening to podcasts when walking down to lectures. I tend to listen to music mostly at home or in the car so I don't need an mp3 player that often.

I did buy myself one of the new iPod shuffles and to be honest I don't like it that much. I bought it for taking snowboarding and it's size means that I'm less likely to break it if I fall over (which happens a lot) but the fact you can't use it really unless you have their headphones (or a similar set) as the controls for volume and changing tracks & pausing are on the headphone wire. Sound quality is good with some decent headphones though and the battery life lasts quite a long time so it's not all bad.

I quite like the new Creative Zens...the little ones like the X-
