Prices should come down over the next month or so, production problems have apparently been resolved and AMD will probably cut the retail prices when Fermi gets a launch date.
That's exactly what I'm waiting for

it would seem my g card has become more knackered and so i'm looking to upgrade. ideally want something that will keep running games a year or 2 down the line in medium to high settings like my 8800gt can handle now. 5770 would seem to be a good choice? the 5850/70 has a £100 price jump for what appears to be only a double jump in memory bit rate, not worth it i'm thinking?
5850/70 have double the shaders of their 48** predecessors, so basically double the performance. And supporting DX11. If you've got a £100 limit though OCUK are doing the 4870 VaporX for £99 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-204-SPThe VaporX cooler is more efficient than the normal one, so quieter and more headroom to overclock.

Okay, with the new Battlefield and Bioshock approaching time is running out and a new graphic card must be considered.
I assume the consensus here is that right now an ATI 5750, preferably 5770 is the way to go. Any recommandations for a card which is reasonably quiet? I'm willing to trade a certain degree of performance for a more silent card. Any opinions on Saphire cards? (Specs of the Vapor-X are looking quite good)
Also, since I've never had an ATI before: Does ATI offer the same multimonitor options as Nvidia (esp. handling both monitors independently)? Am I correct that apparently those cards have no S-VHS output? Older Nvidia cards had those quite often and I have my TV still connected via S-VHS since I've shied away from buying an expensive DVI cable. Though it might be smart to invest here for improved picture quality. One feature Nvidia dropped in the 8-series was the video overlay. Does ATI still have that? (Was a nice feature when watching videos in the TV without hassling with positioning the application). Eyefinity will support three monitors, right? So I could run both my monitors and my TV simultanously (with 1920 max)?

A 5770 is about roughly the same as a 4870 performance wise with the added bonus of Direct X 11 and Eyefinity 3 monitor support.
As for multi-monitor...I have a 4850 at the moment with a 22" samsung connected via DVI and a 17" lcd connected via a VGA cable (but you need an adapter as the cards only have DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort). I don't think they have any kind of V-VHS output. Also - in order to be able to use 3 monitors with eyefinity - I think at least one of them *must* use the display port. So you need 1x display port + 2x dvi etc. to use 3 monitors...but I think you can buy an adapter that converts the displayport to dvi. (but if you only want 2 you can just use both the dvi ports)
What are you upgrading from?
As for manufacturers - I don't believe there is really any difference between the cards themselves as most use the ATI reference design - the differences come in that some may be factory overclocked, some come with different warranties (1/2 year etc.) and others just vary in the sticker on the card and the accessories in the box! Things like the vapor-x come with different cooling solutions to the reference card...so you'll find it'll either be cooler or quieter (or both).
I myself have just plumped up for a 5850 as I didn't really see the 5770 as enough of an upgrade for me from my 4850 (which will be up for sale shortly) as I was tempted by a 4870/4890 due to the drop in price.

Looking at the FPS charts on tomshardware you'd probably get about a 30-50% increase in fps on average if you went for a 5770. Plus dx11 would probably set you in good stead for a while
