In other news, I have a few games running. Ill post my specs of my laptop too..
I have an Intel Macbook. C2D 2ghz, 2Gb RAM, Intel GMA945 GPU.. so not much at all!

UT2004 runs at max
Age Of Empires 2
HL1
PvZ (or anything by popcap but it crashes a lot in OSX)
GTA Vice City and GTA3 both work nicely
CS1.6 and condition zero work a treat
CoD1
Dawn of War (the older ones)
HitMan
Max Payne

So there's LOADS of games that'll run on laptops, even poor ones like mine (I like mine though, its like a dual core netbook with an extra 3 inches )

Yeah, I can honestly look for Mac OS porting companies myself, I'm not being lazy here - I have in the past.

It's the specs which I need - the GMA compatibility is the biggest pain, since many list needing nVidia but technically don't (for instance on that site Age of Empires II, which *might* run, says "Rage 128 or better video card" - does this include the GMA cards? most of the time it's not just the power needed, it's that they simply don't run on certain cards randomly!).

There sadly simply isn't enough information out there to guess, pay the recockulous £50 or whatever ass hat amount they're charging and find out it doesn't work (or doesn't work well) and can't return it.

So need word of mouth to know what works and what doesn't!

XP on the other hand is a lot easier to find "compatibility", simply put most DirectX 9 (and earlier) things will work. Sadly MacOS's OpenGL and so forth doesn't cater to the same rules

Rage128 was a ppc thing.. Mac dont use them.. Age of mythology works great on my macbook in osx, so AoE II will

Windows is more analogous to whore-like behaviour I think.

In any case, I don't bother with Bootcamp (why would I if I have a windows desktop?), thus no DirectX for me, thus any suggestions of XP games are out the window (and as I've said if it runs in DirectX 9, it likely will run, if rather slowly, on Intel GMA's given enough RAM).

If anyone has got more MacOS X games that run on the laptop intel chips post them

looks like me and you are the only ones with macbooks andy. Most games I have will run on the macbook, but they make it increadibly hot when playing games under OSX.
Take UT2004 for example. Under OSX, I cant play it with any decent settings and when I do manage to get it working, it's for 10 mins and it feels like the thing is on fire untill it crashes to desktop! In w7, I can max it out for hours!

99% of games are written for DX so any ports will be bad at best. Most of them rely on you having a power mac or high end imac

If you haven't understood the point of this thread (ie; that we haven't played a ton of games on them), the few posts I've made are about random things I've only tried briefly (DOSBox, SCUMMVM Diablo etc.). The only real game I've played on my Macbook was Civ4, which ran fine (and still looked fine) at lowest settings, even though it got hot (using a piece of wood below it works well though for air flow).

I don't think the "games are written for DX so any ports will be bad at best" is true at all. It's a fallacy that the intermediate graphical language means it will ultimately be a bad port. Possibly won't have the high-end DirectX functions, but 2.1 is analogous to DirectX 9, although 10 and 11 add more things that OpenGL 3 will be needed for.

The problem is when they code purely for cards and so onboard simply won't work (eg; checks at runtime).

i Have a Macbook but haven't tried it for gaming, i use my iMac with a win7 boot for gaming currently and it runs pretty sweet. Also anyone interested in buying a new mac before the end of the year pm me *wink wink*
