Brahms, all games by Bioware usually follow a similar plot but in different settings.
"Similar" as in "they kind of used it in Knights of the Old Republic" I guess...but I can't think of another similar BioWare plot, at least nothing that boring (well, it was a little interesting, just not very deep interesting...). Jade Empire? Dragon Age? Baldur's Gate? Neverwinter Nights (heh, maybe more the expansions which were better written)?
I mean, they're similar premises of parties out to sometimes save the world, or save something, or stop something (varying amounts of whatever that something is), but generally those are general goals of any RPG with a definite antagonist (something that Mass Effect actually sorely needed more of to drive the players to care about the fucked-up politics, apathy, idiocy and pure juvenile paper pushing of the council and other races). The fact Mass Effects plot was based on having people decide "Yes, we're idiots, there is actually something going on" and they actually just being dumb-ass instead of evil (while as with most of the other games - where you are just fighting evil dudes from the evil empire a lot of the time, or fighting baddies with no help - and you're not government employed either).
Just interested to see where this is coming from - not that I disagree that Mass Effect had one of the most boring plots to drive the player onwards (the actual exploration and adventure was fun, but there was no real reason for you to bother to do any of it! The disconnect makes you seem like a little pawn rather then the protagonist).
I hope Mass Effect 2 at least improves the fact you basically get no help whatsoever, and there is no real emphasis on the player being right (instead being shot down as "wrong" until the very last levels).
