Ico. Looks pretty for its time and what they did with the story was kinda neat, but the gameplay was utterly boring and repetitive. I stopped playing half way through and just watched a playthrough of it on youtube. Enjoyed watching someone else play it more than actually playing it myself.

I value Yahtzee's opinion on things, but he too is overrated. He always overlooks gameplay at the expense of design/story. Which is fine, really, but it doesn't fly with me. I'd GENERALLY rather play an extremely well put together but essentially soulless game than a zany eye popping piece of junk.

I don't really consider that opinion to be any greater than the opposite though, there are some games I like that are zany and look cool and play like ass, like Psychonauts, but I think gameplay is a crucial omission, which is why I consider it overhyped. People like Yahtzee are willing to ignore the boring gameplay and hype it to the max.

It's a decent game, but it's not all that.

any mario 2d game (galaxy is good mind) and any sonic game. platformers are also dull

Do you even like platformers tho Brahms? I mean its a bit shitty in some places but if you compare it to the general standard of platforming its competent, that platforming in general sucks wang is another matter.

Well there you go. It's "competent" at platforming, a genre which does in general suck. Don't forget the boring ass combat either.

As I said, it's good, but it's not as Jesus because one of the key components is not that great. Hence, overrated.

Jesus probably wasn't a top pro athlete, but he was still Jesus. Just saying, Jesus wasn't the best at everything either.

Thought of another one: Braid.
Most of my thoughts on the game can be found in this thread, so I won't rehash them here. It wasn't a bad game, it was decent, but it was definitely overrated.

getting slightly philosophical. If you had discovered these games by yourself, without the hype, would you have thought, Holy Shit this is amazing, why is noone talking about this game? If so please stop reading the internet period.

Bioshock was a big disappointment to me, because I was expecting art deco system shock. And it wasn't. Still good, just not what I was expecting.

I feel the same way.

If it has to be overrated, I find Metal Gear Solid fits the bill, although curiously the latest one didn't get all outstanding reviews (still much better then average though). I haven't played them all, but a few hours of the first one makes me want to play more Thief (which I'm crap at) rather then play as Solid Snake any longer.

Psychonauts was actually quite fun once you got the hang of the controls (only really possible on PC version) but the end-level difficulty and some of the monotonous  tasks didn't make it "my number 1 game" but the characterisation was good. Not overrated, it barely got average reviews and press at launch and not many people push it onto others - not as much as some examples here in any case. Still I can see why this can be the case, if you don't enjoy (or push though) the early levels and get the gameplay grove, you're doomed playing it (stupid meat level).

Other overrated singleplayer games? Hmm, Zelda always comes to mind for me, since I'm not a platformer guy (and all the Zelda games contain jumping), it's highly overrated when some of the games rehash the same kind of vibes, with a tissue-paper story (heralded as the second coming in many cases, although I like the ideas behind some of the plots - like the time-travelling one for instance) and light characterisation, and a mute protagonist in an RPG-like game. I wish the series would be more interesting I guess - Mario even has pulled off, I think, some more deeper variations with Mario 64, Mario Galaxy, as a pure platformer. Maybe I've just not found them very fun either when I've tried them.

I'd say Final Fantasy too, to jump on that bandwagon, but since I dislike the grind that those (and similar games) work on, nothing will convince me to even try them, since "try" would mean "wasting 40 hours of my life".

Yeah. The story and setting were nice until you finished 50% of the game and realized that people in Rapture weren't quite smart and from the developer diaries I expected an open city and not a semi-linear world. The fact they dumbed it down for consoles didn't help much either.

Exactly, I remember they showed a dev diary where like, the guy was being stalked by a spider splicer and desperately trying to find dum dum rounds so he could kill it. In the actual game you just murder hundreds and hundreds of thousands of millions of spider splicers with a machine gun and you don't really ever care about ammo or anything.

I think they were forced to switch their emphasis tbh.

Plus the lack of real specialisation made it feel less cool.

Maybe bioshock 2 will be like system shock.. probably not though.Probably not.
