Only played Halo on PC but I thought it was dreadful, couldn't bring myself to finish it. Portal isn't a *bad* game, it's just what you get when you put a pretty average devteam together with great writers : an average game with great writing.

I'm just making this worse, aren't I

HALO is possibly the ONLY game that I have started and quit within 2 minutes of the menu screen. Utter crap.

Portal lost me within 5-10 minutes. I just got so bored.

Thats because you are a fatty. There was no minigun in easy reach, and your tiny fatty brain couldn't handle the dark humour and sexy puzzle-based gameplay.

I got an orginal Xbox just for Halo and I loved it.

Never really bothered much with the others, played halo3 a bit but then my 360 died.

Game surprises... Mirrors Edge, I couldn't see the appeal before release but loved it, parts of it were amazing.

Mirror's Edge surprised me too, but for the opposite reason, I was really looking forward to it, but got bored of it after a couple of hours.

+1 karma for you sir! The original Halo sp was excellent! It was fun to play and I really liked the story too, which is what made me play the later games.

The single player went downhill after that one, the other 2 weren't bad but they just weren't as good as the first one. Multiplayer on the other hand got better as the series went on.

I strongly suspect that Portal evolved from a tech demo.
They created the mechanics, expanded the engine and build a few levels to test it. And liked it that much that they expanded it into a game. It looks pretty much like the story was done as an afterthought.

And actually I think the end result is amazing. Granted, it's not overly challanging. No pixel exact movement necessary. No microsecond timing. The learning curve is quite shallow, which may make it boring (I didn't feel that way), but on the other hand you can put a person in front of it which isn't used to that kind of games and he would not feel lost (until perhaps the last section).
Also - from a theoretical standpoint - it's pretty much a textbook example of the way Valve introduces a game and its elements to the player and leads him through it; something I think Valve has become very good at. Just here it is done in a slower, step-by-step basis.

I found Far Cry boring and gave up after a few hours.

i've completed only up to the ship in farcry, possibly my pc at the time was contributing to frustration though, but i do remember some annoying AI, like seeing me from miles away.

That was the same place I stopped playing Far Cry. I just found it mind-numbing.

 Most disappointing game for me was probably Metroid Prime for the gamecube, that actually bored me silly. Was really looking forward to it.

 Among other noticeable ones were:

 The 3rd CoH expansion, Battlefield 2142, Empire Total War (Im sorry, but its *so* samey....) and Age of Conan

 Seriously, AoC is the *only* MMO/RPG I have only ever played for around an hour before realising how shit it was.

... thats not a SP game. Also it fixed a lot of the problems of 2 unless you are a dirty Jet whore, and in that case i don't like you anyway. Pretty much everyone denounced it as a dirty mod (which fixed the gameplay and made it beeeeetter), so i don't know how you could be disappointed. Unless you thought it was going to suck but were disappointed that it was in fact awesome and you had been lied to?

Same, didn't like that game at all. It seem'd like trial and error gameplay combined with the "momentum matters" thing and you're forced to stop every 10 seconds to figure out where the fuck you're going and end up getting killed by the police guys chasing/shooting at you. Don't get me started on the combat either, thats another 1500 word essay.

I'm not sure other then that, Balders Gate, mainly because I didn't have a fucking clue as to what was going on and couldn't be bothered to learn and maybe some crappy console games like Assassins Creed and the new Prince of Persia games.

Great call on Psychonauts. I wanted to like it cos Tim Schafer is great...but yeah. I almost mentioned Baldurs Gate, but I think that's more a case of me hating turn based combat and wanting it to be more like Diablo.
