I had the opposite problem avast seemed to always take up 10-20% CPU usage which is why I switched to avg.
Guess they all misbehave with certain configs? but are a neccessary evil we have to put up with.

ZoneAlarm is awful, AVG wasn't too bad although it'd sometimes start virus checks whilst in-game, and gave a few minor game problems. But ZoneAlarm would constantly ignore my program permissions and open ports and make it generally impossible for me to play half my games without turning it off. I'm using Sunbelt Kerio now which seems fine, still get annoying popups but it follows the firewall rules I set.

Thank you very much for all the input. It was minimising to a reminder for avg 9 the other day. I finally upgraded it to 9 yesterday, so looks like i may have the same prob as you lot.

Will uninstall etc later and see how we go, If not new anti virus here i come! Not got Win7 sorted yet. Waiting for my oracle to do his thing (Dave that is)

I used to have the same problem quite a long time ago, TF2 would minimise and bring up something stupid like calculator or WMP. Back then I was using a wireless keyboard with various shortcut keys (though strangely, did not have one for calculator or WMP). In the end I got a new keyboard and the problem went away. Magic!

Reinstalling AVG solved my problem, don't know what else to suggest apart from either checking Google or getting another virus scanner.
