The trouble with the SC2 model is that if you work your balls off to get into a better league and then take a break for a month or two (holiday, new game comes out, whatever) you then find yourself trapped in a league with much better players than you until the next time that league changes happen, meaning you're even less likely to play the game.

As I understand it you're not restricted to playing players of that tier- ELO (or MMR or whatever they've renamed it to) is still present (just hidden) and governs your matchmaking. However, if your MMR is lower than your tier's average you'll get less league points and vice versa. Makes sense as if you've just been promoted, chances are the difference in skill levels between top and bottom of tiers could be pretty chunky.

You cant get demoted down a league by just losing, but you can if youre inactive for a while, so thats how they combat that issue from sc2

From my understanding matchmaking will still be done by ELO:

Yes but without the risk of dropping down too much because you had a losing streak or whatever. Thats the #1 reason people have anxiety to solo queue and thats a good way to combat that. ELO doesnt really matter anymore now, its the league and division youre in, so a 4 digit number (or 3digit if youre Gullin15) reduced to 2 simple words, I think thats better. It definitely gives me an incentive to reach gold before this system takes place, I never find the time to solo Q, mostsly because I play with 4 friends all the time and ranked teams sucks.
