i know the difference egg, I had a whole lecture on it, one of the most boring hours of my life. I was asking a rhetorical why because outlook is a pain in the ass on my home pc so i might as well just use the web interface which is fairly nice on gmail anyway

Ah.... The benfits of outlook in cached mode is so you can view emails and send emails while offline (obviously the emails won't actually send until you are online again), along with the extra formatting options they offer you for composing emails...

All depends on personal preference.... What issues you having with outlook anyway? perhaps I can help?

Nothing I can fathom egg, it just crashes out intermittently. Office diagnostics turned off a bunch of addons but its not turning up anything and not giving any error messages, i guess there could be a log somewhere but i'm about to switch over to windows 7 and ill probably get office 2010 through my uni pretty quickly so i'm not in a massive rush to fix it, and i'm never offline if i can help it .

Disco, try running outlook in safe mode:-
start / run /
Type the command "OUTLOOK /SAFE" (without the quotes ) and Click Ok.... see if that runs any better.

I started using Mozilla Thunderbird a while back for emails.. was good as it intergrates with FF very well for RSS feeds,, but I have now moved on to Chrome and reverted back to Outlook..

Got gmail swapped to IMAP now, much better, thanks for the tip regarding the availability (not that I needed it as such, it is a rarely used backup account only!).

I have a few...issues with any version of Outlook. I'd love more calendar integration (come on Thunderbird team! I use Sunbird for goodness sakes ) but there are little things that just fail for me, especially crashes (and no ribbon stuff in 2007, terrible preferences, buried options, poor pasting support, poor quoting, etc) - even with a corporate setup account too. No plugins for some of the Thunderbird stuff I use also doesn't help. At least it generally works just fine if you like the interface, which is more I can say about some of Microsoft's software (and lets not go into Hotmail, where this discussion originated from!).
