I recommend getting a non-usb (i.e. one with 3.5mm jacks) though if you have, say, a set of loudspeakers connected as well, as switching between that and USB out is fiddly at best. (I am, however, open to enlightenment in that area.)
you're right.. you have to change the output device when you plug in a usb headset.. whereas if you plug the jacks into the front of your pc (99% of pcs have front panel audio jacks) it'll automatically switch for you
