So I have a weird error. Lately my sound craps out as does my wireless mouse. PS2 mouse and USB keyboard and normal PC use is unaffected but games and videos stutter. Also I'm seeing one of my logical cores (P4 only 1 physical core) maxed out giving an approx 50% use reading but nothing is listed in task manager or security task manager as using CPU time. Has my P4 given up the ghost? It is 5 years old, I can probably afford a new P4 in the meantime but I was looking to upgrade my PC in Jan so seems like a waste for something thatll last 6 months.

Before buying anything, Id give a fresh install a go.. new drivers, apps ect... Before that though, try uninstalling some apps you have, they could explain the 50% cpu issue you have

Does Process Explorer report anything? In particular, High CPU usage for DPC (Delayed Procedure Calls) might be a driver going haywire...

well after a reboot CPU is fine, I don't have process explorer i'll get it now but starting to think perhaps it is the soundcard/soundcard driver going mental. Just confused as to why that breaks the wireless mouse but not other devices like my other mouse and keyboard. Maybe some crazy driver conflict?

I had a wifi card that used to conflict with my graphics card a while back.. got a new wifi card and it sorted the problem Drivers are mostly feeding to/from the same thing so conflicts can happen and mostly they can seem strange, I'm not a computer scientist so I can't tell you the exact reasons, but apparently it's quite simple

comp scis can't tell you they suck. I'm an electronic engineer with knowledge of comp architecture and I can't tell you despite not sucking like a comp sci, only learnt about 8-bit systems and low level stuff. Oh but in terms of errors they totally happen all the time on a PC its a miracle of engineering the things work at all, but then biological systems run off random noise so were a bit behind evolution.
Nine I have a have a light boot profile with the built in windows thingy although I havn't tried that yet might do but it seems like its a driver conflict though I removed my wireless mouse and been taxing my PC since reboot but nothings happening :/ gonna install latest mouse and audio drivers see what happens then.

Did you see anything using Sysinternals Process Explorer? Only other thing i can think of is that you have a heat problem, In that case, The P4 will have automatically underclocked itself which would obviously skew the readings. Download something that can tell you your current cpu speed - i use this http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

I thought it might be a heat problem but my cpu has run a little hot for 5 years and the problem wasn't reoccurring when I was overheating it with the wireless mouse removed. I rebooted before I installed process explorer so I didn't get the chance to look and it hasn't reoccurred since. I could plug my mouse back in and take a look but i'm going to update the drivers first so it might just go away

They suck. Happy now? Lol. Well I meant the majority that i interact with, I know there are some who are badasses (you r007?) but generally the ones at my uni know less about computers than the engineers.

They suck. Happy now? ROFL... and there is the possibility that less development effort went into R007 compared to comp SCIS

There are no 'badass' comp sci students. Just trust me on this.

Right, it happened again (hadn't got round to installing driver updates). Only seeing 0-2% DPCs but 40-50% hardware interupts. Is that sound card driver fail or the sound card itself dying?

Most likely a driver, but not necessarily the sound card one. There seem to be different reasons why this can happen, for example: http://www.vistax64.com/vista-performance-maintenance/99288-high-cpu-usage-due-hardware-interrupts-2.html This guy had the problem because of deamon tools' spdt feature. http://frazzleddad.blogspot.com/2006/03/lousy-performance-high-hardware.html Blames PIO mode of his hard drive. (Actually quite some people solve the problem this way.) There are also reports of Avira and AVG causing it. Edit: Reading your posts again: so the problem is gone if you don't connect your mouse? Then I'll suggest you try a mouse from a friend. If that works, you simply shell out the 10 bucks for a new one
