I have recently been offered a job subject to "formal remuneration negotiations" which will happen on thurday. But I haven't a clue on how to do it  . All my previous jobs where "this is the salary take it or leave it" affairs. I don't know anyone who's done this and I can't find out what happens in them, everything I've found on google is for sales staff & commision based jobs. Has anyone else done this? I don't want to look a tit or get skanked. |

Well basically it goes like this:
Them: How much would you like to get payed?
You: xxxx <unit of currency>
Them: LOL. How about xxxx/2?
You: Weeeeeeell....
Them: Take it or leave it.
You: Now we're talking!
In other tips: Bring a gun.

Get them to make you an offer first.
Find out how much other people doing the same job get paid and add 10%
If you are able to/have work on Sundays, bank holidays and do overtime make sure you mention that. Try for at least time and a half
Would you get a company car, if so can you take a cash alternative and get a fuel/insurance allowance if you do any driving for the company. Use of a company vehicle for commuting is always a good one if you are working for a company that has lots of vehicles.
Company mobile phone, laptop and clothing allowance (job dependant of course).
Don't sign anything agreeing to work more than 48 hours week and read anything before you sign it.
You can always ask for extra holiday too.
Remember you already have a job

Hmm well about that I dunno, I only worked at McDonalds some years ago (where I forgot to bring a gun) and now I'm working for a government employment agency where there are no negotiations whatsoever - everyone gets paid the same, depending on what you do, how old you are and how long you've been working here.
Help anyone? Guilt needs his monies!

They *have* to open the negotiations tbh... if they dick around you have to ask yourself whether you want to work for such a company tbh |

- 1: Know your minimum. What is the minimum you are prepared to accept.
- 2: Figure out what is the industry average going rate is and start negotiations above that (but not hugely above. 200% LOL).
- 3: Remember that potentially benefits that make up your "package" could also be negotiable.
- 4: Market yourself. Let the company know you are worth the money you are asking for.
- 5: Keep you previous salaries close to your chest.

If you are in the construction industry I have heard the term "cash" used in the relation to pay and not telling the taxman. Not that it goes on much and certainly not in any company I have worked for.
Oh, my last pay negotiations made me about £80 a week better off (and the unfulfilled promise of a company vehicle). Plus I got to chose my job title.

Thank everyone, that's give me a good idea of things to consider. Now I won't have to walk in shouting "SHOW ME THE MONEY" (good advice in the wdg forum and no innuendo *rubs eyes*) +I'm in the science industry, so I unfortunatley will suffer the taxmans full wrath  |
