I'd get a fast mechanical hard drive and wait for SSDs to come down in price.

80Gb Intel SSD's for £135 + delivery.
For some reason they sell the 1.8" version for £135 yet the 2.5" version for £400+
You might have a job with mounting it i.e. getting some rails or something but for £270 for 160Gb ish of SSD in RAID-0 you can't really go far wrong!

Alternatively, scan sell the 2.5" versions (including the new G2 version which if you read the SSD thread supports trim (which needs win7 to work but stops the speed decreasing when you fill the drive) for the same price) for £170 each (which is £340 for a pair in RAID-0)

Also, you're making it more expensive deadly!! I'm a little confused how that's meant to persuade me

The main thing is if I wait, the drives won't get faster only cheaper and bigger. I'm lazy, so the main reason to get them now and not wait is it means I don't have to reinstall my OS, which I hate doing unnecessarily.

I'll decide tonight and order it all. I might just splash the cash now, despite it being a ton, since faster hard drives would help me do some of my work (specifically capturing with FRAPS and video editing). Thanks for everyones thoughts on it, even the mad "more, get MORE FLASH! MORERREEEE!"

This, but I suppose I'm just old and sensible, especially if I wanted to do video where I'd want lots of drive space. These SSD's are nice for fast bootup and first time loading a tf2 map, but if it were me I'd be moaning in a couple of years that I wish I had more space

prices on SSD's won't be coming down for a while, at least 6 months. They are actually increasing atm thanks to the recovering economy (increased demand, similar supply levels). Samsungs NAND process shrink to 34nm has apparently gone tits up too, which isn't going to be able to help bring prices back down.
6 months time and we should start seeing 34nm 3bits-per-cell mlc (currently mlc is 2 bits-per-cell) which should reduce demand for the standard MLC flash and bring prices down a little (3bpc has performance and longevity tradeoffs so it's not suitable for SSD's, fine for usb drives, mp3 players etc though).

IMO it's going to be a year before prices are back to the levels they were at 3 months ago.

claws - I'd only need the SSDs as working space, I'd have the 1TB normal HDD to shove things onto, and a properly-RAIDED server to actually put anything important on (all my documents, email, video, audio, firefox settings, and anything else will be stored there! I'd want my PC to be basically an empty shell with programs and games on . However for some working stuff it'll mean keeping it locally then moving it to the server for backups every so often ).

I'll probably bite the bullet and get them. It's fancy and shiney, and has a practical purpose. Going with Zarfs suggestion on which ones, the others are much more expensive.

I decided to spill on the SSD's. Costly but now I've no reason to upgrade and reinstall for a fair, fair while. I'll report back in this thread when it's up and running (probably will try the RTM Windows 7 for now) and try a bit of minor overclocking probably too.
