I'm seriously impressed by the game (I picked it up online dead cheap - although you can get it through pricey steam), which is a medieval-set third person sword/archery combat RPG game, with an open world.

It's seriously hard to get into, since the controls are not made for beginners (you can't just hit "attack", and need to carefully block, and do horse charges...gets complex fast, the tutorial is tough!). Horses are a whole great new thing.

However, once into it, the game is very rewarding. Every victory in battle is a real victory, with huge armies full of AI guys who seriously are dangerous (if a little dumb at times, they're still dangerous). I've not successfully sieged a castle by myself (got an army of 55, but man, they just die on the single ladder ) - but that's just it, you don't have to. Join a faction and they invade other places, ask for help, have quests to do (some really hard ones, time limited, such as capturing enemy lords).

Very entertaining, just simply a lot of fun - managing hired troops, as well as other heroes in your party you level up and equip yourself, doing tournaments (for some much needed cash), invading territory, doing little tasks.

I want to get to the real meat where I can raise up serious armies - at the moment my 55 is a puddle in a river, where some battles might be 300+ a side, and siege warfare needs a huge army to attack since the defenders really have an advantage, and number at least 100, maybe 300...or more. Even with my elite troops, massacres abound but it is epic, being able to help allies fight too means you max out the 100 NPC's on the battlefield (which for beginners, is a ton and very confusing - mods can up this to hundreds more, for really epic battles).

There's an expansion/upgrade thing coming soon - I hope it doesn't cost too much more, but does add multiplayer combat battles, vastly improves the graphics, adds more gameplay options - looks like a nice little thing for anyone wavering on the "loops crap" line, so maybe worth waiting until that is out later in the year.

After I'm done, however that happens (no spoilers please! it's open world, but there must be something that happens when I conquer everything for one faction ), I'll check out mods, which from what I've looked at are still being made, awesomely.

It was a bit too clunky for me. Also I was too lazy to get a huge army, it seemed too much like house work. But I liked the whole fighting thing.

Picked it up in the Steam sale aaaages ago. Great game- requires a lot more work than it looks, but once you get into the big boy's league it gets very fun. Holding a castle against an army 5 times the size of the one I was commanding was awesome. The moments where you get your ass kicked and have to rebuild your army from scratch = not so cool. Still, expansion is out soon with multiplayer, which could be the greatest thing ever made.

Clunky indeed (especially the quest system for the most part), but yep, get to the big boys it is fun - well, I'm not quite there, I'm not in well enough with my king, and he's like, giving away all the places I conquer. The bloody git! (okay, so I've only managed to conquer 1 place, but man that was bloody hard!).

Me thinks a revolution might take place...I'm building up my rep with some other great dudes instead.

I look at the macro here - the micro isn't too deep, which is great - the housekeeping on an army is minimal (make sure they are fed, and paid), apart from making companions happy means making sure you don't hire the two people they hate

Try the demo, the hut still has it for less then a tenner (£8.73).

Really looking forward to the expansion, as there are so many great things possible to develop with an open game like this.

RPS have a trailer up for the expansion. Basically a lot of people hacking things and throwing axes around. Looks awesome though, 64 player multiplayer could be awesome carnage.

Oooh, much nicer looking, and if we can have the AI play online, then YES YES YES! 50 a side battles of enemies, and sieges!

Changes to the combat looked good too, I never used throwing axes, hmmm...

64 player multiplayer, yeah, best game for it. If it had more tactical combat and AI (as in, squads, formations, and better ways to use shields and help if you're behind someone) it'd be the best melee game I've come across ever.

Can't wait to see what it's like. Hope old saves are compatible, I've got a single (large) set of Nords to kick the ass of, and improved AI and maps would be much more fun to do them in on

erm i play this a little to much, i have 1 town, 2 cattles and about 4 villages, currently fighting in an epic civil war, that as all but distryoed the nation as the other 4 nations are taking out places that are easy pickings but we are getting there and we shall RISE FORM THE ASHES AND CRUSH EVERYONE WHO STANDS UP TO US. *ahem* ok when you get to big boys leage your aloaud to get like that, i mean i commond 100+ armys nows and the upkeep is a killer
